We need an iPad and accessories/cables to create a mobile video studio to use digital storytelling to tell our school, our parents and community about our successes, and those of younger students.

My 8th grade students used an elective period to create a Social-Emotional Learning Group. It's an entirely voluntary group that came together to support the rest of the Middle School and the lower elementary grade students. They like to volunteer for things often and want to leave an impact on the school as they are about to graduate. They are really trying to help make the school a better place before they leave. They especially like to work with the younger students to give them support and encouragement. They are really committed to making the school a better place for every student.
This is a student-led project with my 8th Student Social-Emotional Learning Team. The students are very kind, considerate and have a genuine interest in making our school a better place for everyone.
They connect and work well with their peers but are also very kind, helpful and mindful of the needs of the students in our lower elementary grades. Their work with the lower grade students has been inspirational in many ways from logging onto computers, reading stories during free periods, and writing simple notes of encouragement during formal testing days.
They identified a need to have a digital platform to create short videos using Adobe and Soapbox to highlight, not only the Middle School academic and social-emotional learning successes, but those of the younger students in the grades below them.
The idea behind is their project links literacy, writing and storytelling with technology to highlight student achievements throughout the school.
In Their Own Words
Our Digital Soapbox will allow us to celebrate the success of students throughout the school. We want to use video software to interview students, record encouraging videos for the lower grades, and thank our parents and teachers as we graduate. We like helping younger students and their success needs to be celebrated too.
Our Digital Soapbox will be used entirely by us. Mr. C helps us, but it is up us to decide how we improve the school climate. We will try really hard to focus our last few months of 8th grade to share with everyone, the things that make our school special. As other Middle School students join, we hope that they will continue the effort after we graduate. We hope to let everyone know that our school is great and we are capable of amazing things. We often get a bad reputation for where we live, but Together We Can and Do Great Things!
This project is important because we need to celebrate each other and the great things we do. We don't have a way a to tell each other and the world of how great our school is. Our hope is to make sure that student success is shared with ourselves, our parents and the school wide family. We want to teach everyone about the power of storytelling!
