Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students are an amazing group of young people that have shifted their learning to real world applicable opportunities. They have focused on design thinking pedagogy and student directed opportunities that allow them to take ownership of what and how they learn skills and concepts. This flipping of traditional school has been a difficult transition for some (both students and staff) as the idea of no longer thinking..."What does the teacher want me to say/do versus what do I want to learn more about and why does this peek my interests"...has been frustrating at times for my students. I kept repeating the mantra that "If I am talking I know the information if you are talking you do".

This drive to learn and not just value the grade earned has been an intricate part of what this community holds dear to their hearts. My students are Title I and come from a small rural town that has strong family values. We value STEAM, Immersion and the arts. Many work to improve our school through PBIS and student-led service projects.

Students will use the stages of design thinking to tell their digital story by empathizing with their community. They will use the sports cams to take video footage of their interviews, and observations. Students can use the webcam to gather research by Skyping experts and or use it to also take video footage. The microphone will help students to not only create a more polished video, but empower them to have a voice in their digital stories. This process will include utilizing key 21st century skills (communication, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and citizenship). For example, they will use the Chromebooks to edit together their digital storytelling. They will incorporate all stages to synthesize a high quality video. Students will focus on their experiences relevance in helping create a positive school-wide community through PBIS lessons. Their digital story's will encourage compassion, tolerance and understanding through integration of technology, and highlight strengths/needs in their school/community.

In Their Own Words

We just completed a design thinking project on tolerance in our English/History classes. Through that activity a group of students came up with the idea to use digital storytelling to help teach PBIS at our school. We will research, interview and observe issues that have a negative affect on students and staff. We will create digital stories to teach expected behaviors and empower other students to use their voice to better our campus. The goal is to allow students to address social issues that impact the culture of the school by empathizing with the path each child has walked in their young lives, and helping to create a positive support system for all students.

Student leaders will organize the groups and oversee the interview, research and observation phase. The information gathered will allow us to gear our digital stories to the needs of our school and community. Student leaders will also be required to interview stakeholders such as Principals, Board Members, and District Office Staff. Understanding the needs of the community and interviewing them provides strong leadership skills and opportunities for us as 8th graders. Group leaders will also assist with planning, implementation, and editing of digital stories. Design Thinking allows for all students to take leadership, as this is our process and focus.

8th graders transition from small middle schools to larger high schools. We want to be prepared to look at learning as more than just information, but as opportunities for us to speak up. Our voice is powerful and we need to learn to use it to improve our school. The world is changing and being ready to get a job requires us to collaborate, and critically think. We want to leave our campus better than when we first came to our school. PBIS has instilled in us the desire to be part of the solution to help change our school. We want to work with staff to show struggling students that they are not alone and that all students matter at our school. The ultimate goal is to reduce ineligible students by improving their grades and behavior through our PBIS digital stories.
