Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class consists of 24 gifted fifth graders. This group presents many challenges when implementing instruction, as they have a higher need for enriching and challenging materials. They are also highly motivated, capable of working independently, and even driving their own instruction. Although predominantly Hispanic, my students come from a wide range of different cultural backgrounds within that spectrum.

As a group, we value and support each other.

We lend an ear when someone needs to speak and we speak out when we have something to say. We are a group; we are a team; we are a family.

My Project

Imagine sharing a chocolate milk with George Washington, Einstein, Amelia Earhart or Sallie M. Jenkins. With the right costumes, technology, and a dose of creativity, our class will bring these characters and their stories to life!

In this project my students will design, write, act out, and post interviews with great leaders from history to our school's media center Youtube chanel.

I have chosen 4 characters in consultation with my students: George Washington, Einstein, Sallie M. Jenkins, and Amelia Earhart.

The premise: A famous historical figure has shown up to our school to have a glass of chocolate milk and tell their story.

We will spend about two weeks on each character applying the following process: discussing that characters background, brainstorming interview questions, choosing a child to wear the characters costume, choosing the interviewer, camera crew, and selecting students to edit and post the completed interview to the media page. Who gets to do what will depend on your classroom makeup and students. In the case of k-3rd grade students, the editing and uploading to youtube portion will need to be handled by the teacher. Interviews shouldn't last more than 5 minutes.

I have chosen to film this activity on a simple iPhone camera with a Rode Me video mic in order to boost and improve the sound quality. Editing can be done with simple free editing apps like Magisto but you do not have to edit material if you are not inclined.

This is a great way to have the students become vested in their learning instead of just being a passive audience. Why read about George Washington when you can have him tell you his story in person?

All we need now is for you to help us tell these stories!
