This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Tucked away in the west central region of Baltimore City, our school is home to approximately 300 students in Pre-K through 8th grade. Our school has a 92% FARM rate and a 24% special education rate, as our school is also home to several city-wide specialized programs. Living in an urban setting, our students are fortunate to have a school with ample outdoor green space and a comfortable school building. We strive to make every area in the school child-friendly to maximize learning and comfort with their school.
Our students enjoy coming to school and thrive on integrating technology and hands-on learning opportunities into our curriculum.
The amazing staff employs a wealth of knowledge and creativity to meet individual student needs across grade levels. Knowing that Baltimore City school students experience ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) at a much higher rate than our state and national averages, we feel it is imperative for school to be a sanctuary for these children.
My Project
In additional to math and language arts, students also need direct support learning social and emotional skills. We believe that this is part of the role of the school community.
Our school recognizes Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as essential skills that will allow students to grow into responsible adults with positive relationships.
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) cites five main areas of social and emotional learning that should be targeted. These main areas are Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making.
We will use the Zones of Regulation curriculum to address skills in the areas of Self-Awareness, Self-Management and Responsible Decision Making. The Super Flex curriculum will support skill development in the area of Social Awareness and Relationship skills. These resources will be used to deliver lessons to whole class lessons in all elementary school grades. As students build these skills, we will work to generalize them to all school settings by creating support for increasing coping skills and stress management as we create safe spaces (also called cool down corners) and promote mindfulness in all classes.
We have formed an SEL team school staff to plan for layers of social and emotional support for all students. These materials will focus on preventative supports in all classes from Pre-K through 5, which will include lessons and activities embedded within the regular school day. These lessons and activities will be based on research-based curriculum and activities in our wish list: Social Thinking (Super Flex) and Zones of Regulation. The additional resources will support building student-centered spaces that will allow them to remain in their class which we hope will lead to less lost instructional time, fewer negative peer interactions and normalizing the use of coping skills within all areas of school.
