Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The returning Mechanical Mustangs Robotics Team members are Emma, Sarai, Tam, Alex, Raymond, Ubaldo, Lana, and Angel (seniors) ; Michael, Mike, Rafat, Alvaro, Anthony, Darwin, Murad, Filip, Emily, and Nur [juniors]; and Bella and Kim [sophomores]. We are beginning to recruit the up-coming freshman class and our goal is to have 70 active team members, with a maximum of 48 overnight travel team members for 2017-2018.

During their first year on the team, the students usually choose a few areas to help or focus upon. By their second year, students typically fall into either the programming, mechanical (design, including CAD), mechanical (fabricate), pneumatics, electronics, strategy, judging, business plan, or outreach. They can be in multiple groups, but tend to have one focus area for the competition dates.

This project is for various materials that we will be using to encourage acceptance, love, and positive mental health. Our team is so incredibly diverse and with over 3500 students in our school, we want students to be able see what an amazing community of learners we are and that despite our differences we are all one group of mustangs. It truly is a great day to be a mustang.

According to CASEL, a strong Social and Emotional Learning Approach are "SAFE", Sequenced (connected-organized activities), Active (student centered learning), Focused (develop areas of emotional growth), and Explicit (targeting social and emotional growth). The Born This Way Foundation recommends using this type of multifaceted approach to improve school morale, help students work together, despite their differences, and grow socially and emotionally alongside of their academic growth. In order for students to be ready for college and career they need to be mature academically and emotionally, which includes being able to have a conversation about how they are feeling. This project is to create a "Let's Talk About It" walls in our school, the first focusing on "How are you feeling?". This is based on the "Happy, Sad, Mad, Confused, etc." concept. We will hang the cartoon emojis with a massive amount of photostrips of our students [or groups] showing 4 different emotions. We want students to see themselves in the photos.

In Their Own Words

A "Let's Talk About It" campaign is not a new idea. We see generic multicultural posters that can be purchased to put around school. This does not have a significant impact. By using photostrips of our students, it makes it much more personal. We want people to know it is ok to have feelings. We want our friends to know everyone feels this way sometimes. It is ok to be sad but if you are really sad, you should talk to someone about it and it is ok to talk to friends. We are going to have teachers take photos too. We want to have other campaigns about gender, bullying, feeling confused about the future, safe sexual interactions, drugs and alcohol, etc.

We want the tagline for this campaign to be "Catch Feelings".

As a student leader on my robotics team and in the school, it is my responsibility to keep my friends safe. I want them to know they can talk to me about how they feel if they are mad, jealous, or sad because we feel that way too. I want to show them everyone gets that way and it is ok.

Just because I wear a hijab and you wear baggy jeans, we are still both human and have feelings.

One of our friends was struggling with depression and we thought he might hurt himself. Because I was able to talk with them, they received the treatment they needed. I get sad and I want to be able to talk to friends. This creates openness in our school.

As a guy, it is not cool to catch feelings. We have to be tough all the time which isn't right. I know this is a problem and I want my photo there with the football players' photos showing emotions so we are on the same human level.
