My school is a low poverty Title 1 school in Arizona. This school services around 500 students. Every student receives free breakfast and free lunch each school day. My students are creative and humorous. Many of them live in poverty but still come to school with positive attitudes. I have students who are the primary caregiver to younger siblings and are responsible to take care of them after school. Numerous students do not know where the next meal is coming from if it is not given at school. A few of my students are not sure where they are going to sleep that night. My students live in incredibly difficult situations. With all of the obstacles these kids face, they still remain optimistic about the future. The beauty of teaching them for many years is I am able to witness them overcome these challenges and grow into amazing human beings. My students are grateful for the supplies we have and they always take good care of the equipment we have.
My Project
According to Webster Dictionary, a maestro is an eminent composer, conductor, or teacher of music. My students are going to be mini-maestros by writing their own music compositions. Students will be taught how to write basic notes and rhythms on to a musical staff. They are also going to be taught about tempo (how fast the music is) and dynamics(how loud and soft the music is). After the composition is written, the students will play what they wrote on musical instruments.
The glockenspiels will allow the students' compositions to come to life.
The students will be able to hear what they have written. This will allow them to have a sense of ownership over their songs. They will listen to what was written and make musical choices to change or keep what they have written. The goal of this project is to teach basic music notation and allow the students the ability to be creative.
