Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you have students who spend countless hours visualizing and working towards greatness, you know you have something special. “One more piece… just one more part before we leave” is what I hear each afternoon as club ends. This is what my students do in robotics club. Each time I hear this I am inspired by the passion they have for achieving their goals. They plan, design, develop, and build robots that they hope will be able to compete among the best robotics has to offer.

The majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch at our school and many have only one parent at home, while others come from foster homes.

All of my students have an interest in STEM, but none of them, nor I, had a background in robotics when we started the club. As we recruited like-minded students and gathered materials, piece by piece and part by part, we knew that with great determination we would take our team to the California State Vex Championships one day.

As an educator, my goal is to teach them that despite their past struggles and socioeconomic backgrounds, that they can accomplish any goal they set for themselves.

My Project

As we enter our second year of our robotics club, I see the progress that students have made with their robot builds. I also see that growth and innovation is inhibited when resources are lacking.

I believe that with the right tools, resources, a lot of hard work and a bit of elbow grease, my students can level the playing field and achieve anything they set their minds to.

Participating and competing in Vex Robotics competitions are, simply put, expensive. While our teams have the basic parts to build functioning robots for competition, we lack the finances for lighter, more versatile parts. Your funds will help us purchase the competition game elements, much needed, lighter aluminum angles and C-channels that will allow our robots to have more versatility with tasks. My students are eager, excited, and willing to work for the parts- they will work tirelessly, fervently, and with great determination with the parts purchased. Their designs on paper will find themselves realized! But the most important build from the parts purchased is not in the bot themselves, but rather in the “parts” of my students- their hearts, minds, and spirit. Your funds will be a sign to my students that somebody believes in them, their potential, their talent, and their futures, and that despite their past struggles or socioeconomic backgrounds that they can achieve anything, as long as they are willing to work… for parts.

So, here’s to “One more piece… just one more part before we leave”, because I am certain that piece by piece and part by part, my students will be well on their way to the California State Vex Championships this coming March with your help.
