Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a high poverty school, very close to a major city. They struggle, for one reason, because they do not have the supplies they need or the internet/computers/books at home.
My students do not believe that they can become scientists or might hold the key to resolving a world problem; they often accept things as "it has to be this way", rather than believing they can achieve a STEAM career.
My goal is to show my students that they can achieve careers in the 21st that could change the world, and improve the Earth.
It is with wonder that I gaze at my new students as they come through the doors every new school year. Their potential, the glow in their eyes, their desire to learn. It is my passion to ready these students for 21st century learning, to prepare them for taking care of the Earth, to show them wonders they have never even imagined, and then give them the opportunity to learn, grow and become life long learners.
My Project
The goal of this project is to solve world problems using robots and 21st Century skills. Coding is a skill students will need to know for future professions in technology and problem solving. We come from a low income area, but one that experiences the issues of oil, gas, and space exploration.
These students need to be globally competitive when they graduate, as well as have the ability to solve serious world challenges; the knowledge of how to use robotics will lend itself to the solution of some of those challenges.
My students will use the Chromebooks in stations to research some of the challenges in oil and gas exploration, and in space exploration. Hurricane Harvey demonstrated that some activities need to be done remotely to keep human beings safe. My students will make a model of the area that they have chosen to work on . They will then get in teams to brainstorm solutions. After they have determined a solution, for example how would a robot be used to shut down a part of an oil rig during a hurricane, or how would a robotics be used to research an area on another planet, they will begin to program their robot to do this.
Sphero robot will respond to coding, and Botbrain will respond to touch. Botbrain evaluation kit specifically teaches students how to preform two challenges- one is the robot going through a maze, and the other challenge is a light seeking robot. The additions of the standard server and the continuous rotation server allow the Botrain robot to extend its capabilities by turning wheels, and holding items.
This will prepare these students not only for the next step in school, but for the 21st jobs and careers that will be available to them.
