This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every day in my science class, my goal is to inspire a child. I teach a diverse population of students with more than seven languages spoken in my classroom. No matter what language they speak or the culture they live, in my room we speak and live the language of science. Science can be a difficult subject to grasp when for many of my students. This is their first science class in years!
My plan is to engage and expand my learning territory beyond the classroom and into their homes, lives and hearts.
I want them to enjoy school and learning. In order to reach my students, I must have multiple avenues and hands-on ways to teach them science standards. I enjoy teaching and I enjoy learning from my students, but it becomes increasingly hard with limited supplies and no money to purchase materials.
My Project
My classroom has a population of around twenty-five percent ESL (English Second Language) students. I want to build community events into my classroom that allows for their parents and families to become more involved with science. My ultimate goal is to create a stress-free, engaging environment for these new students. I want them to love and enjoy science but also, to step outside their comfort zones and be more open and sociable with their classmates.
I want my students to make tye-dye shirts and engage in their new country and lifestyle.
I want my students to build friendships with other students and I believe social activities with other students can help them adjust to their new home and school. I hope to use the tye-dye kits, markers and rubber bands to help them to be less shy and as a way to create a safe learning environment.
The solar glasses will be a great way for the students and their families to learn about science and talk with other teachers and students about this new event. Many of my students have never seen a solar eclipse and they do not really know what to expect. I hope, with the glasses, they will ask more questions in class and even carry the conversation home and hopefully, their parents will join us in this event. The parent or volunteers will be visible with the t-shirts so these students can know who to go to for help if needed.
