My students love music. If I had to describe my students in one word I would choose, "energetic". With energy and a love for music, my students create rhythms, melodies and improvisations on a daily basis. Most, if not all of my students are from Caribbean or African descent. With that, they bring talent and culture to the music room daily!
My students crave the sound of the steel pan!
As I previously mentioned, with strong connections to the Caribbean a large majority of my students have had some experience with the steel pan and would love the opportunity to continue their enjoyment of the instrument.
These materials will make a difference in my classroom and my students lives by providing them with practical and fun ways to connect with their Caribbean heritage. One of the most exciting days of the year for my students is "rep your flag day". I'm always amazed at how much pride the students have regarding culture and I would like to provide them with experiences that further that notion.
By providing my students with steel pans, you will see them fully engaged in learning by playing and experiencing sounds that are authentic and unique.
My school's budget does not allow for me to purchase steel pans as most of the instruments I've attained have been through grants and donations. With that said, my students and I would greatly appreciate your support! If our project is funded, we would love to post video performances playing the steel pans.
