"We made this!" These were the words a student exclaimed last year when she screwed a screw into a willow branch. Witnessing the joy that a 6th grade student experiences from using a tool for the first time is thrilling as a teacher. Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are consistently improving and reaching our yearly goals every year. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college, and our alumni have gone on to schools such as University of Nevada, Reno and or University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Our school is comprised of 350 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
We serve all of our students free breakfast and fruits and vegetables from the Food Bank. We also send home food bags, The Backpack Program, to some of our students for over the weekend. We are a Title I school. We are also in the Acceleration Zone in our district. We offer many programs to our parents and families for continued support at home for our students.
My Project
A local artist, Willow Bill, has been the "Man" of creating this fabulous experience to many of our Northern Nevada students in elementary schools all over. Willow Bill comes to the school and does an hour art project that involves all students in an engaging, productive project to make willow branch reindeers. The supplies needed to build the reindeers are willow branches/cuttings, screws, and tools provided by Willow Bill. The students build one reindeer per a classroom. We have 12 classrooms that would love to have the experience for their students. The reindeer sculptures are then going to be displayed in the Northern Nevada Reindeer Project during Christmas that will involve over 1,000 reindeer made from Washoe County School students and other counties.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
