I teach K-12 Gifted Education at a Native American School located in the poorest county in the nation.
Our students face may obstacles in learning. Lack of funding is a huge issue for our school. Our school has been in a financial crisis for several years and ordering supplemental materials has not been an option for the classroom teachers.
Gifted Education means doing activities above and beyond the classroom. This year I started a book club in the high school. I projected that I would have about 4 members that wanted to read and discuss novels each month. We are also doing on- line discussions with each other to further our knowledge in technology. To my surprise I have 17 high school students involved, and 4 staff members. The students excitement about the book club has spread like wildfire. I have several students begging to get in, but I don't have enough books for everyone. I am overwhelmed by the response the book club has received, and it is exciting to see the students motivated to read, and talk about what they are reading. We are in need of multiple copies of novels to keep our book club reading.
With your help you can give my students a reason to escape their life on the reservation, through the world of literature. You will give students the opportunity to broaden their horizons through reading. We would greatly appreciate your help keeping our book club alive.
