My Students

My students are an intelligent, kind, loving bunch of second graders.

They are eager to learn and have a strong interest in developing our school garden. Our school is a Title 1, STEAM focused, Farm to School Charter school in Georgia. We have a hunger for learning and a thirst to live a healthier lifestyle. We are a K-5 school where students come from a variety of backgrounds, and this project will offer all students an opportunity to learn the importance of planting, growing, and harvesting the food they eat. My students are always willing to try new things and their parents are right there to support our new initiatives.

My Project

This project will offer my students the opportunity to design and establish a school garden. Once the garden is established, students will participate in cooking demonstrations and taste tests. Through this project students will learn about the life cycle of various plants, how different minerals, soils, and environmental factors affect plant growth and production, and how plants can nourish our bodies and impact the environment. Additionally, my students will be exposed to responsible gardening techniques and the effects of pollution on our local environment. These project-based activities will enhance classroom education through hands-on learning related to food, health, agriculture, and nutrition.

Many of my students' families do not have the means or knowledge to grow a garden at their homes, this project will provide these children with the opportunity to participate in the creation of a vegetable garden. The long-term value to our community is immeasurable.
