Our school serves students who are members of the Hutterische Brethren. The Hutterites, whose children come to school speaking no English, are a religious group who eschew most technology, especially things that most teachers and students take for granted like the Internet, e-mail, television and radio.
So how do our students get the information they need to learn about the world around them? The old fashioned way, from books. Unfortunately, books, especially books for upper level reading students are in extremely short supply at the colony.
We are trying to build a library of materials, non-fiction, and fiction books for students reading at between the fifth and seventh grade levels. Our students lack the resources to supplement what they are learning in their content area classes. They also lack good fictional materials to help them to practice their emerging English skills. Unlike many students for whom English is a second language, our students return home where German is the only language spoken, and they are not exposed to any outside media. That is why reading is a major vehicle for the improvement of their English skills.
Your help for our library project will open a window to a wider world for our students at the colony. We have creative, intelligent students who need to have books to help them succeed in school.
