This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I currently teach 6-9 grade band at a charter school. The students are very intelligent and eager to become proficient on their instruments.
My band students come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, and most have had very little playing experience.
The students are incredibly talented and are very hard workers. I would like to be able to provide a first class musical experience for them. Our students set very high goals for themselves and are accepting the challenges I put in front of them.
My Project
This year, my goal was to provide more students with the opportunity to experience the wonderful world of band. Due to major recruiting, my program doubled in size. Unfortunately, the number of instruments remained the same.
Currently, our trumpet players are sharing instruments. Adding a new trumpet to our inventory would allow all of our trumpet players to perform together. This would also give them the opportunity to take their instrument home for individual practice.
I believe that music is essential to a student's total development.
Many of the students are being introduced to music for the first time and I want to ensure that their experience is meaningful and nurturing.
