This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever had an dog or other pet that was disabled? Students can learn so much from a disabled animal. Not only will they learn about the animals themselves but how to treat others who are disabled as well. This will allow students to problem solve and engineer a wheel chair for a pet.
We are a magnet school that gives opportunities for students to learn in real world experiences.
We serve middle to low income students in the 1st through 6th grade. Our students are eager to learn but have limited financial means to accomplish new experiences outside of regular classroom learning. Many of these students learn best by hands-on, real world experiences.
My Project
Engineering and experimenting with the scientific method of design is the goal. These students will learn about handicaps and how handicaps don't change the person or the animal. They will also have to use problem solving skills to find what will work best to create a wheelchair for a dog. The student will have to take measurements, use tools and completely engineer the wheelchair in some ways by trial and error. This is a great community service project because the wheelchairs will be donated to people who can not afford a wheelchair for their pet. Wheelchairs can cost from $250-? for an injured pet. The students will be designing the wheelchair, building the wheelchairs and then, donating the wheelchairs to people who cannot afford one. This may save the life of a dog that was going to be euthanized because of immobility.
I have an dog(Lila) that is paralyzed in her back legs and have brought her to school for the students to see.
This has been a great learning experience for them. They have learned about the bones in the dog and what caused her to be paralyzed. They have also realized that she is a normal dog that just can't walk the way a normal dog walks. They have real life inspiration for this project and it will allow them to learn on so many levels.
