I teach a diverse group of students in grades K-5 at a Title I school.
My students are curious, enthusiastic, talented, kind, smart, and hands-on learners.
They jump right in to every song, folk dance, singing game, and instrument that I share with them, and constantly make connections between what they learn in my class and what they experience outside of my classroom. I frequently hear students singing throughout the school: in general ed classrooms, the lunchroom, the playground, and everywhere else. Some of my students have experienced trauma, homelessness, food insecurity, or other hardships.
My Project
These supplies will be used in many different ways this year. The Koosh ball will be used for pitch exploration activities. The guitar picks will be another tool for 5th graders who are learning guitar. The craft sticks will be used for music literacy practice and instrument making. The sand timers will be used in break and reflection areas to help students keep track of their time. The hearing protection will be used in break and reflection areas to help students ignore others while they get ready to return to class, and also by students who are overstimulated by the sounds they may encounter in a music classroom.
These supplies will not only keep this classroom running smoothly, but will also ensure that students with special needs have the tools they need to succeed in music class.
Many students who will use the hearing protectors or sand timers in the break area are working on some social and emotional skills, and the hearing protectors will also be used by students who get overstimulated easily, particularly students in self-contained special ed classes. Please consider donating, and help us get some small items that will have a big impact in our classroom.
