Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in an inner city school in Rhode Island. I teach 130 students each day in my grade 7 Social Studies classes. I have a diverse population of students which includes Special Education and English Language Learners (some which are newcomers to the country). Most of my students receive either free or reduced-priced lunch. Most kids come to school unprepared because of financial difficulties. I don't ever want my students feeling like they are unable to do an assignment because of the cost of supplies.

My Project

As a social studies teacher, I try to make history fun by doing projects throughout the year. Students design 2D & 3D projects that get incorporated into our annual family "History Night" exhibition at the end of each school year. I believe that children should be able to verbalize what they have learned, in addition to visually show their knowledge of the concept. Since I have so many special populations of students in front of me each day, art is incorporated daily. What students can not say/write, can be visually shown. And what may not be able to be visually shown can be expressed in verbally/in print. Students will be able to create their posters on Native American Culture Areas or create their 3D civilizations with the markers, poster boards and art supplies. By donating to our project, you will not only help low income students, but you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

The combination of literacy and art in my classroom is what helps my students to become successful since most have limited English proficiency or the ability to express themselves verbally.
