  • Digital Differentiation With Big Universe Classroom!!!

    Funded May 13, 2013

We have just recently passed the mid-year mark of our school year, and we are seeing what an amazing resource the My Big Universe Classroom software platform is. The instant, unlimited availability (to students with an assigned subscription) of over 5,000 e-books was as wonderful as we anticipated. With special needs students, the choices of our media center's circulation collection are occasionally not quite enough. My Big Universe always has something to offer!

Hardbacked books will never be replaced, but our students must learn to navigate a variety of materials in digital forms. When they use My Big Universe, they enjoy the fabulous combination of a good book and using twenty-first century technology. As simple as that may seem, it is important that our students use computers, netbooks, and tablets naturally.

Although used much less, our students are able to save their writing in their own portfolios. They can also read books "published" by others in this very safe platform.

I wish that we could provide this opportunity to all of our students, but I am thankful that we have it for these students. Your gift has made a real difference for them and their teachers, and we appreciate it!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Montarella

  • Discover Autism And Cognitve Connection Via Technology

    Funded Jun 8, 2013

I want to express my sincere gratitude to all who donated to my project. The iPod, combined with the incredible apps built by Brain Parade, has certainly improved the lives of individuals with autism.

I developed vocabulary activities with See.Touch.Learn. One of the vocabulary words was "moon." A student's grandmother reported, at an IEP meeting, that as they were walking in the parking lot after shopping, he pointed upward and said, "There's the moon." This boy with Autism rarely spontaneously spoke! There was not a dry eye in the room at that moment.

My students use the ipod every day for math, communication, reading or as a reward. They are motivated by this little gadget and they love learning using it. It has truly opened doors for students who can not communicate as well if at all. I feel blessed to be able to offer this my kiddos!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mize

  • Save a Tree, but More Math for Me!

    Funded May 16, 2013

My students were extremely excited when they received the package that contained the document camera. We immediately set it up and started to display anything and everything that we could on the SmartBoard. This activity allowed the students to become familiar with the equipment.

Since then, we have used this device to display graphs, tables, student data, and complex word problems requiring the use of pictures and illustrations. Normally this data would be photocopied and given to the students, but with the paper supply shortage, that would have been difficult to do for so many problems. Most recently, the students used the document camera to present their holiday projects to their classmates. The use of the camera really added to overall engagement of the class throughout each presentation.

Thank you so much for being so generous in your donations and making an impact in my students lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mendez

  • Expand My Learning

    Funded May 15, 2013

My students were absolutely blown away when they found out we were going to be receiving two brand new IPad's. My students come from a very low economical background and are not use to more than an overhead in the class. Now my students are able to take their education into their own hands. They use the IPads on a daily basis whether they are documenting different experiment, researching new ideas, or reviewing old math and science skills.

It is absolutely amazing how students will come to me during lunch just to review different math skills on the IPads. There are many apps that my students can use for review problems and even tutorial videos. These IPads have really motivated my students to want to learn more. I could not thank everyone enough for what you have done for my students. You have made a great impact in many students lives! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

  • Autism Classroom Just Needs Some Basics!

    Funded Jul 31, 2013

Thank you SO much for you generous donation towards my classroom! Your contribution allowed me to start this school year with plenty of materials and activities for my students with autism. Having enough printer ink let me make individualized schedules, communication systems, adapted material, and visuals that my students use every day! My students require an individualized curriculum and I have been able to give them that thanks to your support!

Thank you for supporting autism education and giving my students the chance to learn and grow!”

  • Entrepreneurship Materials

    Funded May 15, 2013

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom and the materials that we need. Our class has been learning about businesses, playing the stock market and looking at how world events effects business. These activities have increased my scholars interest in current events, how math is relevant to their futures and how business is connected to their everyday lives.

These materials have helped to build background knowledge for scholars about business. Each of the scholars is in a group that must make decisions based on consensus and research. The books that you helped my classroom to receive discusses the importance of working with others.

These materials have improved the resources that I have available to scholars in my classroom. The more materials that I have available for them to use that discuss the relevance of their learning improves the teaching and learning in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tan

  • We Need Supplies, Help!

    Funded May 14, 2013

Thank you for your generosity to my second grade class. My project was composed of basic school supplies that we use every day. I do not have to worry about giving my students supplies as they run out because I know that there is enough for them to use all year long. Every time there are new pencils in the pencil box the students are excited and are sure to spread the word. "The teacher put new pencils out! The teacher put new pencils out!" is shouted happily. I also am grateful for the glue sticks, dry erase markers, paper, and scissors. My students have used them every day.

We have made some neat art projects with the materials you have donated. One of the projects is where they use the new scissors they received to cut out a Halloween shape and they flip half of the design to the opposite side of the line of symmetry and glue it on using their new glue. This project was created entirely using Donor's Choose materials donated by you.

Another item you donated was a clock kit. Second graders learn how to read and tell time. This clock kit was easy to set up and use to teach time with. We use it every week. It is kid and teacher friendly. The students think it is fun to use it and they can see the time from across the room. I honestly can say that teaching time is much easier with this new kit.

My students write every day and boy do we go through the paper donated. They use it for spelling test, writing stories, writing summaries, and writing letters. My favorite paper donated is the half drawing paper with the lines on the bottom. Students use the paper to summarize or write about their pictures. I find it is the perfect paper to allow my students to be creative.

Again I would like to thank you for your generosity. Although my project was composed of supplies, they have been used every day. My students have gotten the most out of your donation. I have had the least stressful year thus far due to the fact that I have been prepared and have the necessary materials to accomplish each lesson.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. MCLAUGHLIN

  • Books Needed for Shared Reading

    Funded Jul 11, 2013

My students, along with myself, would like to thank you for your generosity towards our 8th grade classroom reading program. As many of us know, society is becoming less involved in reading. I think its safe to say that this could be due to living in an era where technology with its attendant mind blowing gadgets have dominated the intellect. I constantly hear students discussing their latest victory on a video game, instead of discussing how they viewed a book or debating a love triangle of the latest teen romance. Reading has become a lost habit, struggling to compete with the constantly evolving nature of the amazing and fascinating world of technology. I want to change this by bringing novels of every genre and lexile level to the classroom. I want students to see these choices and be excited about the newest novel from an author; I want reading to become a habit. We need to nurture this all important habit in our students and children. Reading is the foundation for learning, as all learning stems from some type of reading. Research shows that if you cannot read, your ability to analyze and tackle scientific and mathematical problems is limited because of a lack of an ability to grasp the problem. Thus, thank you for giving to our reading project and allowing the students to, hopefully, form a habit of reading.”

  • iPads for Autism

    Funded May 15, 2013

My students cheered and are very happy about having the new Pad in our classroom. They couldn't wait to use the new addition to the classroom. The students are using the new resource the Pad with educational games and working on new skills. Many of the student lack fine motor skills to write and other daily skills, but with the Pad the students can use their fingers or pictures to communicate to others. The project boost my teaching and student's learning by giving students a chance to work independently, which gives me more of a chance to work with other students. The students use the new Pad daily in the classroom and it gets much use. Thank you everyone who donated to my project. You helped make a difference in my students lives.

    Thanks, Martha Maples”

  • AwesomeTehnology Teaches Thinkers

    Funded May 13, 2013

You are so wonderful to support our class. The two tablets and cases are so awesome! These will help us learn to read! We can access literacy websites along with various applications. There are so many apps that let my students explore and learn at their individual learning levels. Technological knowledge is essential for the workers of tomorrow. These tablets are a good starting point to introduce Kindergartners to the depth and breath of the technology experience. Again my sincere appreciation to dedicated donors like you.”
