Newport News Public Schools educates 28,000 students in 42 schools: 5 early childhood centers, 24 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 5 high schools, 1 middle/high combination school. NNPS employs over 4,500 professionals.

By keeping the focus on college and career readiness, NNPS’ graduation rate has increased to 94.8%, up from 72.9% in 2008. During the same time, the dropout rate decreased from 12% to 1.66% for the class of 2019. Newport News Public Schools’ dropout prevention and recovery program provides an array of services to help students graduate on time (in four years).

More high-school students are earning industry and professional certifications, preparing them for future careers. In 2019, NNPS students earned 3,037 certifications, giving them access to advanced post-secondary opportunities, and high-skilled internships and careers.
