Callie Schweitzer's Give-Back Birthday

Part of:
  • $2,865raised
  • 13projects funded
  • 7schools served
  • 12teachers supported
I'm donating my 25th birthday to schools in high poverty areas that are in desperate need of the most basic supplies -- paper, pencil sharpeners, books and more. In lieu of buying me a birthday drink or a gift, nothing would make me happier than to see these students receive the tools they need to succeed. Thank you so much in advance! #cschweitz25
  • Supplies For Success!

    Funded Dec 15, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom supplies. While this is not as exciting as some other grants (such as dissection materials or trebuchets), these supplies are vital to teaching. Each item was opened right away and put to good use to enhance student learning.

We are very thankful for the golf pencils and electronic pencil sharpener. Now every student is able to participate and learn; even those who came with nothing to write with (which happens more than you would think). The black expo markers allow everyone to clearly see the assignments on the board and the printer paper is used for guided notes, labs and homework. Also, the pocket chart neatly displays our Word Wall in the front of the classroom.

These essential supplies allow for me to teach and for students to learn in my science classroom. Thank you for your contribution!”

  • Starving First Graders Hungry for Knowledge

    Funded Dec 28, 2013

First of I would like to express my sincere appreciation to each and everyone of you for donating to our classroom project. The support was overwhelming and my students were so excited to receive the new Reading materials.

When the boxes came, I couldn't unpack the material fast enough for them. They were curious to know what was inside and when they could start using the stations. Once they began using them, that is all they wanted to do. The use of the materials allowed me to be able to teach my small groups more effectively, and helped my students work more independently.

Before the materials arrived my students were barely able to recognize sight words. As of now 70% of them passed they sight word test and are reading at grade level. Thank you so much for your support.”

  • Legends In Need Of A College Library

    Funded Dec 18, 2013

Thank you once again for donating resources to our College Corner Library! My students were thrilled to receive the books, and were encouraged to keep a watchful eye on them by students in the lower grades. Because of your generosity, my students were able to learn more about their best-fit colleges.

The first resource, a class set of "Colleges That Change Lives" books was used to help students identify a list of colleges that would provide a collaborative learning environment similar to what is offered at our high school. Students read the book in its entirety, completed research on individual schools of interest, and presented their research in our first ever Middle School Colleges That Change Lives Fair. Using the second resource, a class set of "The Fiske Guide to Colleges," my students were able to easily identify best-fit factors of some of the top universities in the country. We have a limited number of computers available, so these books proved to be an essential part of their college research unit. We've continued using both books when adding colleges to their prospective college application lists.

Finally, the intentional exposure to the small liberal arts colleges featured in "Colleges That Change Lives," along with the student quotes and fast fact found in "The Fiske Guide to Colleges," has yielded some extraordinary results for our 10th and 11th grade students this year. Several of them will be traveling to these campuses over the summer to participate in enriching summer learning opportunities. None of this would be possible without the support of generous donors like you.”

  • Paper Needed for Classroom Activities

    Funded Jan 15, 2014

Thank you so much for providing my classroom and my students with the needed paper for

our projects and foldables. My students really enjoy fun assignments that your paper

has allowed me to give them. Engagement has increased and homework turn out rate is greater.

One thing they enjoy is doing science experiments, but instructions need to be copied

and reports are required after every lab experiment. All of these handouts require paper. Our

last one was making ice cream in the classroom. I was able to provide these and many other

    handouts thanks to your generosity.

Another assignment that my students enjoy is called Face Math. Students have to solve

a math problem and then draw their answer on a face base on the answer key. This requires

2 handouts per student, but they can now enjoy fun assignments like those thanks to people like you!!!”

  • Lacking Library Looking for Love

    Funded Dec 17, 2013

Thank you for expanding our classroom library. We use the books you donated every day and look forward to exploring our library each time. The fantasy books help us expand our imaginations and the nonfiction texts allow us to develop our curiosity for the real world. Every morning we read aloud from a favorite chapter book and have the opportunity to read independently for ten minutes. Without your donated books, this time would not be nearly as enjoyable as it is. We are also able to bring these books home to share our love of reading with our family.

Thank you again! Your generosity will never be forgotten.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Claridge

  • A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

    Funded Dec 16, 2013

Our hearts are filled with gratitude. We were able to purchase a camcorder, poster boards, an easel, white board, and markers thanks to your gift. I am happy to report our recordings have been a success. The number of students completing their homework has doubled. Our parents are grateful for the opportunity to helping their children and keep up to date with what we are learning in our classroom. Students are receiving lessons at home and our quiz and test scores have improved. I also think I've become a more effective teacher using tons of visuals and streamlining processes.

Your donation has also given our special extra help corner life. The white board has become a motivational tool for students who other wise lagged behind their peers. Students present their work to each other and receive feedback from their peers. There is just something special about standing up going to the board and being noticed. Students are receiving positive attention, helping out each other, learning new strategies, and seeing a fresh perspective. The extra board has brought an element of accountability, positive recognition, and independence to our class.

Now, I'm not the sole source of teaching. Thanks to your gift students are able to create posters for the classroom. They range from vocabulary word posters to posters about mitosis and meiosis. They love taking ownership of their education. Students take great pride in their work and their confidence has gone up tremendously.

Thank you for sharing my vision and believing in my students. My students and their parents are getting support at home and I am becoming a better teacher. Best of all, students are allowed to express themselves in a multitude of ways. My students are amazing and they are doing wonderful things with our new resources. Thank you for making it all possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Corporan

  • Is That Really True?

    Funded Dec 18, 2013

I can't thank you all enough for the wonderful non fiction books you purchased for my students. The unit on Penguins was fascinating stuff, and really allowed my students to delve deeply into the subject. They also loved The Story of Buddy the First Seeing Eye Dog, and it meshed nicely with our year long study of Man's Best Friend, and its incredible evolution from " friendly" wolf to modern canine helper.

Soon we will be using the Dinosaur books that we were able to buy with your generous donations. The kids are thrilled to be starting a unit on dinosaurs, and I am thrilled that they will be doing so with their very own research books in hand. Our unit will conclude with a field trip to our local Museum of Natural History. I'm sure with these books my students will be well prepared for the Hall of Dinosaurs. The best part is, each student in my class will bring home a copy of each of these books, as a souvenir of a great year!”

  • Amigos de Libros

    Funded Dec 18, 2013

Thank you all for your generous support of our Amigos de Libros project. The students in our Spanish Club have been thrilled with all the wonderful books they have been reading together, and then taking home. One of my students told me he is reading the books at home with his father who speaks Spanish. He also said he is using the books to teach his father English. If my students are to be truly bilingual, they need exposure to Spanish Language books so that they can be aware of Spanish grammar, and spelling. I have a good feeling that these books will be treasured additions to their personal libraries for years to come. Thank you again for believing in my students, and supporting our little Spanish Club.”

  • Panthers Are Moving On When Reading

    Funded Dec 20, 2013

My students often talk about the new additions to their classrooms: their headphones. They often reference "RAZ Kids," the program they use the headphones with most and how many books they have read or the number of stars they earned last week. I know their general education teachers appreciate the additions to their classrooms as well, often talking about how excited students are to start their day reading a book. The headphones are coveted pieces of classroom property; students smile anxiously as they unroll them in the mornings, anticipating the next book they will hear.

The real impact can be seen in the data and will hopefully be put to the test in the coming weeks. At the beginning of the year, we had 15+ third grade students at high risk for falling far below grade level standards on AIMS, Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards. That was 15+ third grade students at risk of repeating the third grade. However, only one student fell in the high risk range on the final benchmark assessment of the year. Many second graders, who will be facing the intersection of Move On When Reading and common core next year, saw dramatic increases in their weekly reading fluency progress monitoring assessments.

Our headphones have changed the way many students look at learning to read. These headphones have also changed the early academic careers of many second and third grade students. La Familia Herrera, the Herrera family, thank you so much for your caring. Please continue to change lives every day. Si se puede!”

  • Reading and Math and Science OH MY!

    Funded Dec 16, 2013

My students love to read, so the books that we have received from this grant have brought another wave of excitement in my class. They love when we get new books. So when the items arrived and I allowed them to preview everything it was amazing. They couldn't decide what they wanted to get their hands on first. The mystery books (which have 2 leveled passages within - which means they can buddy read) are such a hit.

My students are using these resources daily. The comprehension passages are wonderful for my guided reading groups. The kids love non fiction passages and are so excited each time we use them, which is weekly. Also, they are loving using the new whiteboards and markers. We use these mostly during Math and Guided Reading. It's wonderful to see them taking such good care of these boards and markers. Our old ones were very scared and markers were almost out of ink. I love their sense of ownership to these new supplies. It is very refreshing!

My students are excited to read all the new books. They are excited to use the whiteboards in Math everyday. When the students are excited to use a resource, they are engaged in the lesson more. We can do more centers because of the clear pockets that they can write and wipe on. This way I do not have to make so many copies. They are willing to try new things because they love the new items. Thank you again for all your generous donations!”
