  • Support Science Literacy

    Funded Nov 18, 2010

By providing students with opportunities to read, write, and speak as scientists, I am now able to not merely support basic literacy skills, but to teach, emphasize, and intentionally embed these skills in my instruction.

I am so thankful that you funded my project "Support Science Literacy". My students use the books on a daily basis! They love it when it is their turn to go to the science center. These materials have made meeting our science standards through literacy much more engaging and authentic for my students. Through this donation, I have been equipped with the tools and strategies that I can share with my students in order to enable them to function at a high level in their world.

Having these materials available in my classroom not only has helped me teach science, but it has engaged my students in true inquiry. Utilizing high interest texts about the real world allows them to go beyond surface knowledge and understandings. When students are allowed to ask their own questions and pursue answers to them, the learning becomes the student's and the motivation is intrinsic.

Thank you for your support of science literacy! My students would not have this opportunity without donors like you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cox

  • Teaching Mathematics Through Literature

    Funded Jan 15, 2010

Since Children's literature offers exciting potential for exploring mathematical ideas, I am truly glad for the opportunity to incorporate that experience into my mathematics classroom. Supporting all students' learning is a challenge, the interest generated by the books you've donated have allowed me to present new material in contexts that helped to bring meaning to otherwise difficult concepts. Thanks to your generosity, literature now serves as a way to support my students varied learning needs in mathematics. My students tend to be very uninterested in school. By tying literature with math, I was able to make them see that the things we learn in class do relate to their lives. As a result of your kindness, I am able to use literature as a springboard to support students' understanding and motivate their mathematical reasoning.

    Thank you very much. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cox
