Students will use graphic novels in literature circles to investigate instances of social injustices or personal issues within the protagonist characters of the novels. By analyzing this character, students will be discussing their motives, implicit and explicit character traits, the affect the issue has on that character’s identity, etc… through a character map in their groups. The format and purpose of graphic novels will be discussed so students can use those formats and purposes to create their own graphic interpretation of a current event or issue that affects them. The research process for this issue or event will be illustrated in a concept map. The final products will be published and reviewed by peers, teachers, and parents.
