  • Let's Start the Year Off Right with Choice Reading

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you so much for donating to my project! You've given us a great gift as we begin the school year. Today is the first day of school and one of our topics is gratitude. I shared with students that our project was funded and new books are on the way, and I also said how grateful I am to our donors and Donors Choose for supporting our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Davis

  • Tripping Through Other Worlds Via Books

    Funded Feb 9, 2022

Thank you so much for providing these wonderful books for my students. Many of these titles were selected by the students and they love having these new books for book clubs or independent reading time. A good book with a rich or intriguing plot motivates so many readers, including reluctant readers, to dive in. I think the key to building strong readers is to determine their interests and provide books that match up with those interests. These books do just that. It's good to know there are folks like you who give to others, to fill a need.

These books are cherished in my class, by my students. When choosing titles for book club, students are excited to read when they see their favorites are available. It feels good to give my students books of their own choosing. Thank you for helping me to do this.”

  • The Power of Choice in Reading

    Funded Dec 15, 2021

It's so great to see my students really enjoying a good book they've chosen. Students have so many things they must do. When they get to kick back and relax with a wonderful book, this is often the best part of their day. There is great power in using one's imagination, and dreaming about other worlds. This selection of contemporary fiction and fantasy books is perfect for my middle school readers. I have a class of thirty students enjoying a free reading day right now. The room is quiet and everyone is engaged. As a teacher who loves literature, this a beautiful sight to me. My students are immersed in their books! Thank you so much for enriching their reading lives.”

  • Students Need Books for Clubs

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

We are so thankful for your support. Your generous gifts allowed us to build our classroom library with more cool books.

We are using these books for book clubs, where groups of four friends get together and read the same book. For many of my students, I think this is one of the favorite activities we do all year. We usually do four rounds of book clubs per year, since it's so popular. The students are in charge of their own learning, together. That's powerful, and empowering. I find the discussions and the writing involving books of their choosing is richer and more authentic. Thanks again for helping my students find joy in the classroom.”

  • Students Discover New Worlds Through Books

    Funded Oct 24, 2018

Thank you so much for this gift of books. When I opened the boxes and revealed our books, it was like a party in the classroom. My students were so excited! I have a book check out system in my classroom similar to what libraries used to use. Students put the information on an index card and then check out the book. The books are literally flying off the shelves. I hope there are books left for the last period!

I chose adventure, fantasy, sci-Fi, realistic fiction and poetry because these are the genres my students voted most popular. The Jason Reynolds books are favorites. Although we read whole class novels, these gift books are for pleasure reading. Every three to four weeks, we spend an entire period just reading for pleasure. Pleasure reading is a great escape and allows students to use their imaginations like nothing else.

In some classes, we took our new books to the library for our first read. There we could spread out, get comfy and read next to a buddy. The wide variety of books allows every student to choose a title that's appealing. The big idea here is simply that reading is fun. Most times we read every Friday in the classroom. It's a great way to relax after a quiz.”

  • Let's Get Started with Online Literature Circles!

    Funded Oct 12, 2011

Thanks for the generous donation of books my students love to read. Through your gift, we had enough copies of each book to create literature circles and discuss them all On line. My students felt empowered by this assignment because they were reading the books they like, the books they chose. Long before the books arrived, they were asking, "How many days do you think it will be until we get our books?" On the day when our books came, it was like a holiday in our room. The news spread through the campus and kids from other periods were coming in to check out our treasures. Thanks again for making a difference in the lives of my students.”

  • Kick Back and Read, Middle School Style

    Funded Oct 8, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous gift of books for our classroom. It was like Christmas when the books arrived. The students were happy and excited, and could hardly wait as my teacher helpers cataloged the new books before placing them on the shelves. When the students go home and I look at my bookshelves, there's a lot less empty space now, and it's wonderful because these are books the kids really want to read.

The students are amazed that companies and an individual who don't know them personally would donate funds to buy books for our classroom. This conversation gave us the opportunity to examine the concept of philanthropy, and its special meaning during challenging economic times such as these. Thank you for being an example of good in our world for my students.”

My 8th graders, all 196 of them, are happy, active, kids who are enthusiastic about many things, including reading. On Fridays, they look forward to free reading time, a time when they can relax at their desks and get lost in a good book. My students are voracious readers, many of them completing more than a book per week.
