Scholastic Class Magazines to Enhance ELA Skills
Funded Dec 24, 2017Thanks so much for donating to this project!
These rich print Scholastic class magazines have helped my students in multiple ways. My students have such a thirst for knowledge and are very curious to find out more about the world around them.
Reading these magazines have opened up a whole new world for my students. They love getting their own "newspapers" and they were so excited when they first used these magazines. They flipped through their own magazines, did a picture walk to see what is in the magazines. And then they just dived into the magazines and read! It's really very moving to watch to see them so engrossed in reading!
My students used these magazines during independent reading time, as well as sharing what they read with their partners during partner reading. My English language learners were fascinated to read about animal facts and current events from around the world, and to see the amazing pictures with captions in these magazines.
We also used these magazines as part of our guided reading for small group discussions after reading the articles in the magazines. These magazines were also used during our Tuesday after school small group tutoring sessions.
Exposure to a variety of high quality texts, particularly high interest informational texts, is such a big part of our student' success. My students are really thrilled to be able to keep their own magazines, take their own magazines home to share and read with their family.
Again, thanks so much for your support of reading and providing my enthusiastic, spirited group of 2nd graders with the right materials to keep them engaged and excited about learning.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Hu-Greig

Funded Dec 25, 2017With your generosity and contribution to this project, my eager students now have 4 Chromebooks to use in our classroom. The four Chromebooks have supported my students' learning tremendously, specifically with helping them practice their math and language skills using various educational websites such as education.com, research (such as going on brainpopjr.com, pebblego.com) and learn to code on CodeMonkey.com.
Most of my students do not have a computer at home and do not know how to use a computer. They are great kids and just needed our support and help in getting them the necessary tools to learn!
Now with these Chromebooks that you helped to get for my students, my students are more motivated to learn, more engaged and focused on task. They can now collaborate, build and share knowledge with their friends especially with the introduction of Google Classroom as part of their learning in our class.
I am surprised by my students' love to learn how to code via codemonkey site. They would beg me to allow them to forgo their recess time to play and let them stay in the room to be on the Chromebooks to learn how to code! As such, I am planning to start a computer club during our recess time every Wednesday after our midwinter vacation. I am looking to introduce more coding sites and programs to my students and build upon their love for coding.
Thanks for making it possible for them to have the necessary tools to acquire the skills necessary in this digital, technological age of ours! Again, many thanks for making such a positive difference in my students' learning!”

As the Page Turns: A Novel Bunch
Funded Dec 29, 2017Many thanks for donating to our project. My students have benefited from reading these new series books we got. We now have enough series books to circulate and my students enjoy doing "book trading".
With your generous donation, this project has allowed my class of 23 students to get different series fiction books for them to be doing their series book reading. I read one of the Junie B. Jones series books during our Read Aloud time to start off our series book reading. And it sparked off class discussions on the elements of the story such as characters, plot, theme, problems and solutions. I had also taught my students how to use a graphic organizer "Say, Mean, Matter" to cite text evidence in analyzing the characters and theme of the story.
My students love reading time as they now can get these new books of their choice to read. They use these new books during independent reading time where they stop, think and jot their thoughts onto their reading journals and also during partner reading. They also love to do book trading and to discuss the stories they read with their friends.
Thank you so much for your generosity and for providing my students with the many opportunities to read with these new series books!”

Coding and Learning to Build Bridges via Gamification
Funded Dec 26, 2017My students were so excited when they realized that we had received a class online subscription of Code Monkey and building bridges kits. It is a total game-changer! My students are now more motivated to stay on tasks and complete them so they can get to do coding on CodeMonkey and or build bridges with their friends. I have set aside a STEM period every Tuesday afternoon and my students look forward to this STEM period every week. They are also willing to forgo their recess yard time just to stay in class to learn how to code and to build their bridges!
With this online coding subscription and building bridges kits we got, I see my students engaged the whole time. They are very motivated to complete the coding challenges to get the bananas back for the little monkey, as well as trying to get their bridges built. They quickly learn that mistakes are part of the learning process and have to problem solve in order to get to the next level. While learning how to code, my students are also coding to learn.
We are also incorporating 16 Habits of Mind in our curriculum. Coding and bridge building definitely help to instill perseverance in my students as I see them refusing to give up as they learn to think critically, creatively and problem solve. I believe that the habits of persisting, thinking creatively and the problem solving skills they acquire from coding and building bridges will help them unlock the key to the future in this digital, technological age of ours. In the future, not knowing the language of computers will be as challenging as being illiterate or innumerate are today. I am so happy that this project was fully funded and my students get a chance to learn how to code and build.
Thank you so much for your generosity and support! Thank you for making coding and bridge building possible for my students! Many thanks!”

Mrs. Hu-Greig
