Celebrating Black History and Excellence!
Funded Jan 22, 2024Like many teachers today, I teach Black history all year long and spent the entire school year adding to my classroom library to make sure it featured all people, but particularly people of color. All of my students are students of color, most of them are not grade level readers, so having a range of reading level books that also reflect themselves is a challenge. One of my successes this year was getting more students invested in what they chose for independent reading, and guiding those choices to be positive representations of themselves.
I was able to get an LGBTQ history book into the hands of one of my Rainbow Club members. I had Asian students thank me for having books for and about their history. I had Muslim students read books about their experience and non-Muslim students reading to understand. And of course, I had Black and Latino students reading about people who looked like them who achieved great things and helped their communities.
It was a year well spent and I thank you for helping me fund it.”

Bring Reading and Geography to Life
Funded Oct 11, 2023Thank you so much for supporting affirming and positive identity formation for my Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban, African American, and Afro-Latine students.
They were thrilled to see more books for the independent reading library, especially books with faces that looked like theirs.
These books were used as part of Latin American and indigenous history units in the fall, and will be used for Black history in January and February. Please consider contributing again for the Black history books, materials, and supplements to curriculum that will expand their understanding of broader American history topics.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Yani
