I teach 9th-12th neurodiverse learners in a Special Education Transitions: College & Career Awareness Pathway program. The goal of this program is for 100% of graduates to enter either a college, a job training program, the military, and/or a career. In California, only about 25% of Special Education students are competitively-employed 1 year after high school graduation while around 50% are enrolled in college. These figures are even lower for the rural area where my students live. Transitions is a unique college & career awareness pathway that aims to reverse achievement gaps for students with IEPs through project-based learning & credit recovery opportunities. Students are explicitly-taught 21st century skills needed to become productive citizens and competitive participants in a globalized economy.
