Students will use The Hate U Give in class, and at home, to explore the notions of identity, race, economics, community, and language. Through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old narrator, readers fall into a world of poverty, opportunity, and friendship. Themes of study particular to this text relate directly to our overall theme of the human condition. These new books will spark a connection between text-and-self for my students who face adversity and racism far too often, while, hopefully, instilling the importance of self-confidence and speaking your truth. The novel will show my English learners how important words can be.
