Drought-Tolerant Garden
Funded Nov 1, 2018My students were overjoyed when materials for the Drought Tolerant Garden project began to arrive. Students helped in every part of the process. We worked together to assemble the garden beds, plant seeds in our seedling starter set greenhouse and assemble and fill our compost bin. We also studied how to create and keep a good compost bin, and began filling the bin with carbon and nitrogen rich waste.
Once we assembled the garden beds, students in Biology and Earth Science classes filled the beds with soil and compost. They were able to see firsthand how to combine purchased soil and compost and how turning soil enriches it. They were also able to see how composting reduces waste, and is nature's way of recycling. Seeing and turning the compost reinforced the importance of decomposers studied in our ecology unit. The students then transplanted seedlings of milkweed, lilac and sage, which are all native, drought-tolerant species.
Inspired by the project in class, several students chartered a gardening club to maintain the garden after school, and be more involved in gardening. Students want to expand the garden to include more native landscaping and fresh produce to grow and give to students and families. The supplies provided by this project have planted seeds of motivation.”
