In March of 2020 our stay-at-home order took effect. We were weeks away from performing our yearly musical programs. We were not allowed to have any performances during the 20/21 school year either. In fact, we weren't even allowed to sing in our classrooms or music room due to requirements of the Washington State Department of Health. The 21/22 requirements were released in August. It states that singers must wear a MERV13 or 3-layer surgical mask. The majority of my students wear a cloth mask, which means it's unlikely we will be allowed to sing again this school year. In a typical year, we would use recorders in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. We were not allowed to use recorders last year and we won't be allowed to use them again this year. My students will be so disappointed. This year can still be better than last year. The good news is, students can share equipment if they have access to hand sanitizer. This is where ukuleles come into play. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students deserve the chance to learn to play an instrument. We need your help to make this possible.
