• Reeds And Valve Oil To Keep The Music Going

  What a wonderful way to start off a cold and icy day in Queens! My students and I are so grateful and excited to have reeds and valve oil coming. We are getting low on reeds from a previous project, so the timing is just perfect. The new reeds ensures we can continue playing without interruption.”

• New Band Program Needs Reeds!

  It is now January and we've had our reeds for a couple months. Our students are playing their instruments now, and the reeds have enabled clarinet and saxophone players to play their instruments. Students are playing the first 5 notes, and through some squeaks and squawks, are really starting to see progress!

  Thank you so much for your contribution to this project! Reeds are disposable and once you break it, it's gone. Having all these extra reeds have enabled my students to play with confidence knowing there will be reeds available to them.”

• Instrument Swabs To Keep the Music Going

• Practicing (Percussion) Makes Perfect

  Great news! Our percussionists each got to take home a practice bells set in January! Each one now practices more as a result. Our winter concert was very successful, and I feel like I see a real improvement in their ability to read the "mallet" percussion parts in our band music.

  This week, our 8th grade percussionists had a quiz that used bells. I could tell some definitely were able to practice more, since their preparation for the quiz was much better than I had seen before. I credit this to the new bell sets they have at home for practice.

• Practice Tuba for a Better Band

• Stand Up (again) to Broken Music Stands!

  Thanks to this donation and a previous one, more than half of the stands that students use daily are brand new! It's hard to explain how much this helps. First, students take pride in using new equipment. We don't get a lot of things "brand new" in our band program so this is extra nice. Students don't need to interrupt rehearsal to let me know their stand is having a problem, and better yet, I don't need to stop teaching to fix them. Better yet, these stands don't wobble or drop students' music off the stand. We call these stands the "bully" stands because only a bully would knock your stuff on the floor. Now that I've been able to discard the bully stands, students are able to focus on music-making in class.

• "Stand" Up and Support Music!

  Funded May 30, 2019

  Thank you so much for your help in fulfilling this Donors Choose project!! The stands came quickly and just in time! I asked students to help me put them together, which they enjoyed doing. In about 30 minutes, we had all 5 new stands ready to go. Students have been playfully arguing over who gets to use the brand new stands, since they are all perfect. We also had fun deciding which of our worst stands deserved to be thrown away.

  Our entire band program is very grateful for the new music stands. They are a first step to replacing all of the music stands. Eventually, there will be no stands "standing" in our way of successful rehearsals.”

• Percussionists Need Practice! Flutes Need Clean Instruments!

  The new equipment you helped purchase for our band program has already gone to great use! First, the practice bells sets for our percussionists have been very appreciated. Kids are able to take them home easily, since the cases are light and can even fit in their backpacks. Percussionists were grateful they could practice for an upcoming playing quiz, or work out a tricky mallet percussion part. Now, they know there is no excuse for not knowing their part.

  Also, the flute cleaning equipment has been very helpful. All of our flutists dutifully "swab out" their flutes after each time they play. They see some of the dirt they are swabbing and are thankful that it is no longer in their instrument.

• Clarinets Are Clari-needed!

  I cannot fully articulate to you the joy of playing on a new instrument. My students almost never experience this joy. Knowing that an instrument has never been played before, and you are the first one to really make music with it, is an incredible feeling. The student who is playing this brand new instrument is a very hard-working kid who is very passionate about music. Moreover, this student's old clarinet also went to a deserving student who had only had a barely-working clarinet to play on before.

  Thank you so much for supporting our project. The new clarinet will be appreciated by happy clarinetists for at least the next 20 years.”
