Chains is a historical fiction novel about a young, enslaved girl named Isabel living at the onset of the American Revolution. She's a captivating character who fights for her freedom throughout the novel. Unlike many enslaved people during her time, Isabel can read, and her literacy plays a major role in the events of the novel. We know that our students don't read enough. As part of our effort to foster a culture of independent reading, we're hoping to purchase a copy of Chains for each student so that they may continue reading outside of class. We're kicking off the year with an independent reading challenge - students who are "caught reading" outside of class will be entered into a drawing for a special prize! More importantly, we hope that seeing the world through Isabel's eyes will inspire students to reflect on the injustices of both the past and the present. As we read the book, students will also be studying non-fiction texts such as slave narratives, historical speeches, and efforts to end modern-day slavery. We're excited for a year of reading and rich discussion. I hope you'll join me in making reading magical for my sixth-graders. Thank you!
