Research has shown that physical movement not only helps a child's body through gross motor practice, but also aids their brains in achieving academic success in the classroom. Rainy days are often spent inside, with the following days on a blank blacktop waiting on the playground to dry up enough for classes to return. Currently, the most common blacktop activity is chalk. However, chalk is used up quickly, and black top injuries are common, due to the lack of blacktop activities for the children to participate in. This will hopefully be changing soon. Fun and educational gross motor activities to be painted on the blacktop will be utilized by students during outdoor recess, as well as learning opportunities in an outdoor classroom setting. Painted activities will include hopscotch (utilizing shape and number identification), an obstacle course including alphabet letters and other gross motor skill practice, and four square (as this black top will be used by kindergarten-second grade). A riding track will also be painted along the perimeter to allow the ride on equipement to be safely used. Proper storage of outdoor learning materials will guarantee future wildcats will enjoy them for years to come. This project will take community volunteers and hard work to fund and complete, but will be well worth the effort for the children to be able to enjoy recess and have additional outdoor learning opportunities. Thank you for your consideration.
