Many of my students do not see the world outside of their poverty-stricken community. Many come from homes in which the parents are uninvolved in their lives, whether that be social, extra-curricular activities, and especially in their school lives. Most of my students' parents are unaware of their child's reading level; what's worse is that they lack the confidence to ask their parents to help them become better readers. They don't know how to ask for a quiet place to read in order for them to grow as strong readers.
