Our students attend urban middle schools where the budget is tight and there is never enough for many necessities, let alone instruments and other supplies that are considered "extras" by some. We have managed to obtain instruments for students who are economically disadvantaged (a large percentage of our student population), but we don't have enough for accessories, such as strings. They are pulled out of class one period a week for a string lesson, and students learn so much more than how to play music--they develop self-confidence, a sense of self-worth, a hobby that is fun, "safe," and fulfilling. Many students have difficult family situations, and this program gives them something that is "their own" and "special." Music feeds the soul and it helps in all facets of learning as well!
