Snacks and Books
Funded Oct 24, 2024First, thank you so much for your generous donations. You keep my classroom stocked with food and physical books to read, and my students and I are forever grateful.
I have students (past and present) who know they can always come and grab a snack when they haven't had breakfast, forgot to pack a lunch, or just need something to hold them over during the day. So for that, I am beyond appreciative that my students know they always have a place to come and grab food.
The sets of books have opened up a world to my reluctant readers. By giving them books that are both accessible and entertaining, they feel much more confident in their independent reading abilities.
Thank you always for your kindness towards students you do not know.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Weisel

Funded Jan 21, 2024Thank you so much for getting nonfiction books into my students' hands. Being that these students are in AP Language and Composition, the level of reading and additional independent research that they need to work on supplemented because of your generous donations. Using this as a springboard, we were then able to plan a trip to meet with research librarians at the New York Public Library to continue and connect to how research is done and specifically around the topics in these books.
These books kept my students reading physical books (which is a dying activity) as well as learning about wars and cultures outside of what is traditionally taught in mainstream curricula. You helped to support teenagers/students taking control of their learning by giving them the jump off points and resources to do so.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Funded Dec 12, 2023Thank you SO MUCH for providing snacks for my students. While I often give snacks to all of my classes, they also come in handy during lunch periods and after school when I have groups of students who are just looking for a quick bite. You keep kids in the school building fed and able to get through their classes and extra curricular clubs/sports.
I have groups of and individual students who know I have snacks who look forward to popping in to grab something and keep on with their day. This keeps my students from having to go to bodegas in the morning and/or leave the building when the school food just isn't cutting it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping teenagers fed throughout the day.”

Funded Sep 5, 2023Thank you so much for supporting my students! We often pretend that teenagers aren't the hungriest people on the planet, so being able to keep them fed is paramount. I know that I am not my best when I am hungry, so being able to provide snacks to my students is so important to keep them at their best.
When teachers are asking for supplies, it normally surrounds books, pens, pencils, tissues, etc. But snacks are just as much of a classroom supply as anything else, so keeping it stocked in my room is a must.
Thank you so much for keeping my students fed.”

Independent Reading Book Clubs
Funded Mar 30, 2023Thank you SO MUCH for helping me get all of these books for my students. Especially in today's climate, giving my students an ample supply of books to challenge and/or support their thinking is crucial.
With these books, students will be able to explore authors and narrators that look and sound like them. They will create their own analytical and critical gaze in which they will consume information. They will be able to articulate why we need to see and have books like these in ALL classrooms, available for ALL readers.
I am so thankful for your continual support. You keep books in the hands of my students, and for that, there will never be enough I can say or do to show my appreciation.”

Funded Jan 29, 2023I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the snack donations! You are helping to keep growing teenagers fed and focused throughout the day.
My students have been so grateful to grab a breakfast bar in the morning or snack during lunch or even to bring to their sports practices. There is comfort in them knowing they can come to my room, grab something to eat, and keep moving throughout their day. It truly does make a huge difference in the life of a child who may not have access to this otherwise.
Because of your generosity, many of my students who have food insecurity know they can grab a snack while in school. Many of these students are taking snacks for their siblings as well, which I know they are grateful for.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Keeping my students (and their siblings) fed is incredibly important to their development.”

Funded Sep 29, 2022Thank you so much for the generous donation! Classroom furniture is hard to come by in a Title 1 school, and with these new shelving units, I have been able to better organize the physical space of the classroom.
My students were surprised when they saw the new shelving. Being they are high schoolers, they were like, "Finally, your room looks organized" or "Wow. I can actually move around now." The shelves house books for students to read that they can take home (so they are constantly being replenished as children take books as well as organizing their journals and writing/test portfolios.
These shelves help not only me stay organized, but my students as well. They now have easy access to materials they use throughout the week. They can now look in their portfolios and grab their journals whenever they need them, not just when I can get to them and/or pass them out. The room looks so much more inviting, and it continues to create a safe space for students (safe space not just meaning physically not getting harmed by tripping over things, but a space where they know it is for them-where they can access what they need, when they need it, because it is their classroom). I cannot thank you enough for the generous donations.”

Funded Feb 17, 2022I cannot begin to thank you for your generous donations! You put physical books in my students' hands, which is honestly becoming something many schools are no longer doing. My students crave being able to interact with texts that are not on screens, and for this, I thank you for helping my students.
The House on Mango Street is a book that is beautifully written and easily connected to by teenagers. The writing often inspires (and very much so this year) students to express themselves creatively, in poetry and vignette form. This year, during the pandemic, it opened up the space for my students to express themselves and share their feelings in this current moment. The discussions and writings led to self exploration and learning to trust those around us. Without these books, our personal vignette projects never could have been completed.
Many of my students were so excited by the pieces we read and decided to finish reading the book on their own. Others, having been inspired by reading something they liked, chose to sign out other classroom books--which is huge for so many of my students. The books led to vibrant and real discussions where students really got to learn so much about each other. This was all made possible by your thoughtful donations.”

Funded Jun 11, 2020I want to thank you SO much for your support! With your donations, we were able to create a summer book club for students who wanted to continue engaging in reading and learning over the summer. The students took full ownership over deciding what we would discuss each week. They explored personal connections, worldly connections, and continued to connect with the analysis of literature.
This group happened to be all girls, which was refreshing and quite honestly, necessary for our young female students, who are often stifled and feeling unsure of themselves in their teenage years. Being able to connect to a female protagonist/narrator really helped our young females create agency and explore their sense of worth.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for providing my students the ability to continue to share their love of reading and learning.”

Ms. Weisel
