Classroom Library of Vivid Nonfiction Books!
Funded Oct 20, 2024Thank you so much for supporting my classroom of middle school readers. The material has been life changing. Your support has changed the life trajectory of students in my classroom. I am now able to provide explicit, systematic reading instruction that is fun and engaging. The RAVO program is meaningful and language based springboarding rich discussions about the complexities of the English language. This program has really clicked for these students as non readers are now reading the passages from this text fluently. Reading is now more vibrant. The Geodes program books teach Wilson phonics in books that are interesting and dimensional. And, the National Geographic books showcase the photos National Geographic is famous for along with nonfiction topics.
Thank you so much for supporting these middle school readers.”

Dear Donors Choose philanthropists,
Thank you so much for your generous donation to help students at the McDevitt Middle School read tangible paperback books and magazines. The 6th grade boys love the Time Magazine for kids' articles on Messi as well as reading books from the I Survived Series. Reading about volcanoes explode is like reading a live action series. The 7th grade girls love the Bluford books. These books are written at their fluency level but talk about sophisticated high school level topics. The Bluford series introduces second and third tier vocabulary words and allows students to see vocabulary words in organic language rather than on a worksheet or a spelling test. It allows students in reading groups to feel accomplished after reading chapter books, practicing prosody, managing multiple characters and storylines and complex plots. These stories stay with students for years as they grow attached to the characters and their challenges. It has been great to have actual books on our shelves.
Reading in my classroom consists of explicit instruction in spelling. Then, I try not to speak and let the students read out loud. It is a blessing to have a small group of students, so everyone gets to speak and be heard.
The magazines have been great to read current event articles and discuss content vocabulary. Thank you so much for the multiple subscriptions.
Again, thank you so much for your generous donation.
