For my students to become readers, they need to read - a lot. They're more likely to do that when they have characters and stories they can relate to and Lexile levels they can access. I deeply value Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Leo Tolstoy, and Toni Morrison, but my reluctant readers don't stick with their novels past a few pages. The YA books on this list, however, draw in many of my students so they're eventually ready to pick up these authors on their own. These books will make my students more excited, and, eventually, more skilled readers. Our school has a fantastic school library, but we can't make daily trips there. By expanding my class library, students can quickly find a book they actually want to read.
