  • Sorting Tools for Autistic Students

    Funded Jun 24, 2023

Thank you for your support for our Technology program. These materials closed a gap in our curriculum allowing students with severe special needs to access the standards on their learning level. The new activities are engaging and attractive! The students' absolute favorites are the little animals that they happily match with their homes!

I knew the sorting boxes would be a hit! Even some of my students who are hardest to reach were anxious to try to place the objects in the correct slots! The Farmers' Market activity is a fun center for our "Virtual Farm Field Trip" lesson.

I'm looking forward to doing more virtual field trips in the future! It's so fun to develop activities around a theme and there are in-line activities galore to explore! Many thanks to all who are making a difference through Donors Choose!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Scott

  • Root Robots for Coding Adventures

    Funded Feb 17, 2023

With your help, I was able to lead an afterschool Introduction to Robotics club this spring. The students enjoyed coding several different types of robots including the Root Robot that we purchased through Donors Choose. The participants loved the way Root can be programmed to draw on a whiteboard or play musical notes.

Coding is an important skill, and robotics is an ever expanding field of study. I am hoping that the experience will encourage my students to continue coding, problem solving, and engineering.

Engaging activities and a variety of experiences in computer engineering is inspiring to students. I hope this afterschool club will lead some of the children to join competitive robotics teams in the future! Thanks for your part in preparing students for a bright future!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Scott

  • STEM Activities For Special Learners

    Funded Apr 1, 2022

Our students got a sneak peek at some of the materials at the end of the last school year and will have many opportunities to use new materials during our new school year that is starting very soon! The tools to sort the bears were a big hit! The brightly colored scoops, which are like tongs, were a challenge for some to operate, but with a bit of help, they all found great success!

I am excited to see their reactions to the life cycle models! Some love insects, while others may be more interested in frogs and turtles. The important thing is that, thanks to your donations, there are plenty of rich learning materials to go around!

My current project with Donor's Choose is geared toward students who are able to use computer programming to control robots. Imagine the fun students will have and the learning that will take place using these engaging devices! Quality materials often come with a big price tags, so please consider giving once again!”

  • Magnetic Engineering Challenge

    Funded Jan 20, 2022

I wish you could have seen the students in action as they took on this engineering challenge! They used the recycled materials they brought form home and created ramps and obstacles which they were able to adhere to the whiteboards using the magnetic tape you donated. They earned points for the length of time it took for the ball to go from top to bottom, having it land in a bucket, and the number of obstacles it passed through.

The students each got one roll of magnet tape which was more than enough to complete several obstacles. Then they adjusted the obstacles for maximum time and to get the ball to hit their target. Our principal stopped by to give me a message and she was so memorized by their engagement that she stayed to watch! The students enjoyed the friendly completion among groups and the opportunity to do hands-on engineering.

We ended up with magnet tape to spare, so your donations will also help next year's third graders when they get to this exciting unit! I am so grateful that we are able to bring this type of activity to so many students. I appreciate your help in engaging young people in STEM activities throughout the year!”

  • STEM Activities for All Learners

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

You have brought the joy of learning through play to so so many precious young people! The bright, engaging tools you purchased draw these students in effortlessly and expose them to numbers, engineering, problem solving, and more!

My students with autism and other special needs now have a variety of materials to help them gain STEM skills. The tools are safe and appropriate for their abilities. They are so excited to see what Mrs. Scott has in her cart each week that I can hardly get through the door! I am so thankful for your support! You have made a big difference for so many children!”

  • Headphones for STEM Enrichment

    Funded Dec 12, 2019

My classroom has been transformed because of your donation of headphones for my STEM students! All students are far more focused on their work and are also able to access the auditory features on the computers without disrupting others. Although they can hear one another (and me) in order to communicate and collaborate, they can also focus in on their own project when necessary without distraction.

They are finally able to use the features that allow them to listen to game instructions or to have passages from articles read aloud to them. This is incredibly beneficial to my students who are learning English, have difficulty reading fluently, are on the spectrum, or who are hearing impaired.

I am so impressed by the impact this project has had in my classroom- it was beyond my expectations!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Scott

  • Create a Path for STEM Education

    Funded May 13, 2019

We wrapped up the last school year with an engineering unit for which we needed a variety of materials in order to provide exciting opportunities to challenge learners. Your donation helped us to purchase 6 Create A Path Magnetic Center kits! The plentiful materials meant that students could work together in small groups to learn about physics, gravity and teamwork!

Special needs students and younger ones could easily manipulate the pieces and older students had fun creatively extending the kits using recycled materials! Children also learned about the Engineering Design Process of planning, building, experimenting and reworking ideas. Students had a lot of fun while learning!

All students were excited and inspired by the tools you donated. You reached hundreds of learners! I'm so grateful for your help and look forward to another year providing STEM activities to students!”

  • Math Enrichment Games

    Funded Jan 14, 2019

Thank you for supporting my latest project! I had money left from my first project, so instead of buying the games I wanted for my classroom myself, I put it out on Doner's Choose. Being as it was on the tails of that last project, I got no response from family and friends who had recently given so generously. However because Doners Choose was willing to double my own gift, I was able to get twice as many games as I would have been able to afford myself. We teachers constantly buy things for our classrooms, but with the help of Doners Choose, I can make my own donations go further!

Children learn so much when they are playing and there just isn't much time for play during school. These math games are easy to set up and the directions are simple enough that children can manage them independently. That leaves the teacher open to observe and assess unobtrusively while the students are engaged. The first grade enjoyed adding, subtracting and working with odd and even numbers while playing Sum Swamp. Our second graders played Money Bags and honed their skills around counting coins.

The students love the bright colors and cute animals in Sum Swamp. They literally gasped when I showed them the board! Money Bags has coins and dollar bills that made their eyes glow with excitement. I like that the money is realistic in size, imagery and texture (ridges on sides and raised images). They are going to learn so much while having fun!”

  • STEM Activities For Challenging the Challenged Student

    Funded Nov 14, 2018

I wanted to thank you for contributing to my classroom project at Nelson Place school! The students have all gotten to enjoy the new materials that you helped purchase. The centers included magnetic buildings manipulatives for developing engineering skills, counting and number recognition toys, and fine motor activities to improve dexterity.

The students were so excited to try out the tools that I could hardly settle them down to demonstrate! They found unique ways to use the materials that I could never have imagined. They swarm me now as I enter the classroom with my cart to see what exciting activities await them!

With your help I was able to bring STEM activities to students who struggle to use grade level manipulatives and to provide engaging activities for students with difficulty focusing. Now ALL my students are having the rich experience they deserve!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Scott

I teach Math Enrichment to all students at my elementary school. Some of my students, however have unique needs and cannot utilize the manipulatives supplied by our math curriculum. My Special needs students deserve STEM activities that interest and challenge them while developing motor skills. The materials for this project are carefully chosen to be durable, enticing, and manageable, while being safe, non-choking hazards. The magnets allow for easier construction and design work, while the Montessori toys develop fine motor through the use of tried and true manipulatives such as pegs and beads on strings. Students will be excited to challenge themselves with these engaging toys and this teacher is already inspired to create lessons that develop STEM skills for students with learning disabilities and physical challenges!
