This year I threw away making a seating chart for the carpet and chairs and allowed the students to choose where they want to sit. So they can move to the front or the back if needed. On the carpet I have pictures around the edge where they can sit in the traditional way -criss-cross applesauce, but I allow them to stretch out their legs if necessary in the middle of the carpet which is open for that reason. I still have assigned tables, but the students sit freely in any chair at that table. Flexible seating allows students a choice on where they want to work and improves engagement. Allowing them the choice of where to sit also makes them feel like they are just as important in making decisions in the classroom as I am. It gives them not only a choice, but a feeling of comfort that I'm trusting them to make the RIGHT choice for themselves. For my project I am asking for donations of cushions for my students who like to rock back and forth on the carpet; carpet markers will help designate spots not only on the carpet, but around the room; floor seats with back support will be used by students who have trouble sitting the traditional way on the carpet; wobble chairs will be used by students to rock back and forth at the small group table; lap desks will provide a hard surface for students to work on while on the carpet. Flexible seating allows movement in the classroom. Movement while learning has been shown to increase focus and on-task behavior. Your donations to my project will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
