I have included the following books within this Donors Choose: Holes by Louis Sachar, and The One and Only Ivan by K.A. Applegate. My goal is to use these novels to “beef” up the curriculum and help my student not only meet the objectives that have been set forth by the state of Arizona, but also provide them with the opportunity to use literature as a means to help them solve real-world problems. I have included a small summary of each book and have identified the real-world problem students would address. "Holes" by Louis Sachar – This winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award features Stanley Yelnats, a kid who is under a curse. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime, punishment, and redemption. Read World Problem – Students will address problems that could arise just from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They will review necessary coping skills needed to make the best of every situation. The goal is for them to learn to appreciate the people they meet in their lives. "The One and Only Ivan" by K.A. Applegate - Inspired by the true story of a gorilla who spent 30 years alone in a cage at an indoor zoo in a mall, this beautiful book imagines what that gorilla might have felt and said about his life. These unforgettable characters overflow with pain and love in an ultimately hopeful story about the healing power of art. Read World Problem – Many students struggle daily for a sense of belonging. This book would allow them to analyze a character who has some of those same feelings and allow them the opportunity to investigate how to overcome this type of struggle.
