  • Stacking Up Numbers: Building Number Sense With Blocks!

    Funded Jul 21, 2024

Thank you very much for donating to my project! The students were so excited to see our school custodian begin delivering boxes to our classroom! As I opened the boxes, the students were guessing what was inside each box. I began to pull out the stackable numbers and the students began to count aloud. Then one of the children suggested we put the numbers in order. When I pulled out the adding machine they all wanted a turn to hold it.

This week, I will place these math manipulatives into the students' math centers. I will sit with each group to show them how to use the stackable numbers and plastic coins to make a match. Next week, the students will begin to learn to stack the numbers from lowest to greatest and then greatest number to the least number. These number blocks will be used for countless math centers and will help promote number sense for my kindergarten students.

    Thank you for your support!”

  • Big Dreams, Big Books: Empowering Kindergarten Curiosity

    Funded Aug 20, 2024

I just wanted to take a moment to say, "Thank you!" for donating big, sturdy books to our classroom! After receiving the books, I set up a book display on the table and when they arrived at school the next day, they were SO curious to explore the new books.

Currently, we have been busy learning how to read and enjoy books . This week, the students are learning to "partner read " with a friend. Students take turns holding the books with a partner and name the pictures they see on the pages. Then students begin again and this time they make up a story based upon the illustrations that they see.

Knowing that I now have sturdy books that the students can share with one another makes me so happy!

Thank you again for your generosity!”

    Mrs. Martin

  • Like a Kangaroo, I Have a Pouch Too!

    Funded Apr 19, 2024

Thank you for helping to support my grant, "Like a Kangaroo, I Have a Pouch , Too!".

Firstly, the classroom looks SO much nicer with brand new pouches without rips and tears. Also, these pouches are of higher quality and has a removable pencil pouch which will help to keep the children much more organized. (That is essential while teaching 24 kindergarteners. :) )

On the first day of school, I explained to the children that they will have special pouches behind their chairs to hold their school supplies. They were excited to put their own supplies into their pouches and they put their crayons into the removable pouch.

Although it may seem like a trivial purchase to some, it makes a world of a difference to the kindergarteners who are learning to care for themselves and learning to become independent.

Thank you for your donation, especially during this financially challenging time for so many of us!”

    Mrs. Martin

  • We're Not "Board"!

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

What a great time we have been having this winter learning to play board games. We spent about a month learning the MANY different games you bought for us. We talked about playing fairly, taking turns and laughing with one another.

Each day, students were split into small groups and a teacher/aide would explain the rules to the group. (Some of the students already knew the rules!) Students would take turns playing the game. The next day, they would learn a new game. We did this until all of the children had a turn playing ALL of the games!

Now my kindergarten students grab a game and create a group of their own to play the games.

This has been a wonderful experience thanks to YOUR generosity!”

  • "Magic Boards"

    Funded Feb 22, 2023

Thank you very much for donating to my project "Magic Boards". By donating to this project, 50 kindergarteners were positively impacted by your generosity. In addition to this year's kindergarteners being able to use the markers and boards, next year's class will benefit from them, too!

The children were so excited to use the"Magic Boards". They were able to use special markers and erasers to wipe away their work quickly and easily. The students were able to use them in math, spelling and writing class. We also used them when taking class votes. They write yes/no or a happy/sad face on their boards to let others know what they are thinking.

These were also great resources because it uses a lot less paper. It is another step to going green!

Thank you for believing in my idea and students.

    Sincerely,

    Victoria Martin”

  • Everyone Is Welcome Here!

    Funded May 22, 2022

This project that you supported was able to make an impact on an entire school! Thanks to you, our hallways reflect who we are as students, teachers and a community of acceptance and love!

The teachers at my school were able to select quotes from well-known and lesser know heroes that have helped shape and continue to shape the communities and country in which we live.

As students enter the school, they are instantly greeted by a sign that lets them know that they are ALL welcome to enter and they ALL play an important part of our Troy Hills Family.

Thank you for helping to spread the message of acceptance and love.”

  • More Than a Rug

    Funded Aug 8, 2022

Thank you for the wonderful rug that is now the main focal point of my classroom. The rug is the perfect spot for us to meet for story time, it is also the right spot to build with blocks and it is great for sitting to chat with a friend.

The rug has given such physical warmth, but also it has created such a cozy and inviting feel to our classroom. So many adults enter our room and comment on what a great rug we have and they want to know how I got it.

Thank you to the wonderful people who gave to my classroom and have transformed my new kindergarten classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Martin

  • "Bound" to Be Great Writers!

    Funded Mar 16, 2022

Oh, what fun we have had in our class since we have received the many wonderful items to create our own books. My students have been busy writing their own poetry books and now we are moving onto realistic fiction stories. My reluctant writers have been working so hard to create their own books. My capable readers have been in "overdrive" writing and building books. It is amazing what bright colored paper can do along with the book binder machine to get students motivated and eager to write.

My class has also been sharing their stories with the other grade levels, too. I can see the sense of pride on their faces as they come back from sharing their books with the, "Big Kids".

Thank you for believing in this project and for believing in my young students. Your generosity has touched my heart and inspired my students.

    Thank you!”

  • Books Belong in Our Hands!

    Funded Apr 28, 2021

Thank you for your incredible generosity! My students will thrilled when the Scholastic book boxes arrived. I took the boxes outside and spread all of the new books onto the grass. Students then were able to choose 5 books to read. We all sat in the shade, under an oak tree reading books!

It was a very special afternoon. The students were on beach towels, six feet apart, masks off, enjoying being children again.

My students were also able to bring these books home and read them to their family members.

Once again, thank you for donating to our class project.”

  • Reading Together While Being Apart

    Funded Dec 22, 2020

Thank you for bringing the love of reading together to my students! It truly has become the highlight of our day. Every morning at least three students will ask me, "When are we going to read our Poppleton books?"

I am able to split my students both in-person and virtually into "Breakout Rooms" and they take turns reading their books aloud to each other.. We call it our "First Grade Book Club". They feel very grown up when we do this activity. I pop into each of the groups and we have a book discussion.

We are on our last book and they are already asking me if I can find them some more books to read together.

Next week, my students will be writing their own Poppleton adventures based upon the books that we have been reading.

Because of your generous donation, my students were ALL able to participate in this class activity. It helped to keep us connected and all of my students had the same opportunity to read the same literature...together! It was truly one of our favorite activities during this challenging school year!”

A majority of our day is dedicated to reading: both reading to the students and then teaching them to read. Children's literature is a wonderful way for students to learn life lessons, learn values, learn about their communities, and learn more about the world around them. More importantly, it is a wonderful, and crucial, way for them to learn more about themselves, to love themselves, and to appreciate each other's differences. Unfortunately, only 14% of the children’s books written have multicultural content, (Lee and Low) and because of this, the opportunities for some students to connect with characters--personally, culturally, etc.--may be limited. By receiving these multicultural books, folders and poster, students will be able to see themselves, their cultures, and their personal experiences through storybook characters that look like them and act like them. Not only will this help to further kindle their love for reading, but it can help them share their unique experiences and stories with their friends. At the same time, this can strengthen students' empathy, as well as their imaginations. I want all of my students to know they are loved, valued and seen in my room. My hope is they will learn and live the quote, by Maya Angelou... "In diversity there is beauty and there is strength."
