  • Get a Harlem Classroom Supplied for 2019-2020!!

    Funded Oct 24, 2019

Our basic supplies have arrived and we're thrilled!!!!

With the new full case of copy paper, the printer is fully stocked to allow students to print out their essays and projects for my class and their other classes. The EXPO markers are thick and bright [with lots of fun colors to chose from!] to allow students to showcase their work for their peers; my students are proud to display their calculations and explain their methodology to their classmates. The white board cleaner helps to keep our board nice and clean; we use the whiteboard heavily every day so it needs a good wipe down regularly. The envelopes are being used by students to obtain letters of recommendation and for a variety of other college application related tasks.

Thank you so much helping us obtain these necessary supplies. While this wasn't the most interesting project, these materials are needed and are all being utilized already.

    We appreciate you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Viau

  • Bulls and Bears in Harlem!

    Funded Sep 4, 2019

Today was SO MUCH FUN!!!!! We conducted our trial run of the Bulls and Bears Game with a sample of students from the Syracuse University - The Economics of Personal Finance - class.

The game is very intense and thought provoking. The students found the game to be a lot of fun because THEY HAD TO THINK!!! This is not a game of chance. Although there are plenty of unexpected events that one cannot control - which come in the form of "News Flashes" - a student's decisions will make or break them. The students quickly realized that they had to think through each choice carefully - and analyze the short run and long run consequences of their actions.

Students started with a set amount of funds and the student who doubled their net worth first was the winner. The game provoked a big sense of competition. In this game, it is not the luckiest player who wins; it is the smartest player with the most knowledge of wise financial decisions [who thinks long term] who is the winner.

I had a blast watching the kids make sense of the game and get competitive with one another. They cannot wait to roll the game out to the entire class after we've finished our unit on investments. You've given us a wonderful tool to put our knowledge of investing into action in a very fun way. Thank you for this hands-on activity. I love it!!!!!”

  • Help Harlem Start off AP Statistics Strong!

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

What a FUN day in AP Statistics today!!!!!!!!!!!!! We've been working on COMPARING DISTRIBUTIONS using shape, outliers, center and spread [ S.O.C.S.]. How FUN to wear our new socks to remember SOCS!!!!! The 'socs' came in VERY handy for a QUIZ today!!!

Since our unit 2 exam is coming up on Friday, the Quick Study laminated review brochures came just in time. Since the brochures are laminated and sturdy, students will keep them in their bookbags all year to quick review while on the subway commuting to and from school. The brochures also come three-hole-punched for easy organization in a binder. The review brochures will become more and more valuable as we gather more lessons and concepts throughout the course.

The students loved getting their review materials and fun, cozy socks. It's starting to get cold in NYC, so the socks will be useful in keeping toes warm as well!!!

Thanks for bringing us this joy today! You are angels!!!!”

  • Print, Organize, Clean and Calculate in Harlem!

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

We are delighted with our new materials!!! What a great way to start off the school year!!

This morning I laid out the colorful folders on student desks before students arrived. Several of them shrieked with excitement as they saw their new school supply. The quality of the folders is very sturdy -- which is good since I distribute A LOT of handouts in this course! In years past, I've seen very sad-looking beat up folders that spill student work all over book bags. Now, students will be able to keep themselves organized to prepare for exams.

Since many students do not have access to a printer at home. I have my own printer here in the classroom that I allow them access to when they need to print out essays and other typed work. Since I have not one, but two, typed assignments due on Monday - your timing with the copy paper and toner is impeccable.

Going green is so important for our planet now and our students are becoming more aware of this in their living environment classes and environmental studies class. Therefore, they were delighted that we will be recycling our batteries rather than contributing used batteries to a landfill.

Since flu season will be here before you know it, the tissues and hand sanitizer are a big plus to our classroom.

And, students are forever stapling their work with my staplers -- since you obtained 5,000 staples for us....I'm pretty sure we're good on staples for the year.

All in all, we are very appreciative of the generous donations that you made to allow us to obtain these materials for the 2019-2020 school year. We feel organized and LOVED. Thanks for your support.”

  • Harlem Learns Personal Finance and Earns College Credit at SU!

    Funded May 9, 2019

I am so elated that this big project was funded!!!! This was a big ask and I sincerely am appreciative of the generous support that you have shown for this new course. This project was part of a five-part series of funding requests to raise the funds to obtain two class sets of these college-level textbooks for my high school seniors.

After a decade of campaigning, I finally convinced my administration to allow me to teach a Financial Literacy course as a math elective. The class has been a hit with our seniors who appreciate the real life skills that they learn through the course. Last year, I discovered that Syracuse University teaches a Personal Finance class that can be offered to high school students through Syracuse University Project Advance. I immediately jumped in this opportunity for our students. Next month, I will be getting certified as an adjunct professor so that my students can earn 3 college credits for this course on a Syracuse University transcript. This is all so very exciting!

The textbook is excellent. It's broken up into five major segments: Foundations of Financial Planning [including preparing your taxes] ; Managing Basic Assets; Managing Credit; Managing Insurance Needs; Managing Investments; Retirement and Estate Planning. I've gone through the text and find it well written for student interest, full of robust examples, and academically rigorous.

All the students who signed up for the course plan to attend and graduate from college. They realize that they will need to be able to properly manage their finances after college in order to build wealth and be financially independent. I'm delighted to be able to provide these e”

  • Help Harlem Learn Financial Literacy and Earn College Credit!

    Funded May 6, 2019

The books are IN THE HOUSE!!!!!! All 53 books have now arrived!!!! What a sense of accomplishment!!!!! With the resources now fully funded and received, I can now focus my energies on creating awesome lesson plans over the summer.

I'll be attending a week-long training session at Syracuse University to get me ready to teach this course at the college level. I can't wait to learn new strategies!

The student interest in this course, especially now that students can earn college credit through this course, is through the roof! I have to turn kids away. Which is a problem, but as far as problems go, it is a good problem to have. Next year, we may train more teachers to teach more sections of this course.

Without your support in obtaining the necessary materials to offer this class to our students, none of this would have been possible. Thank you for caring. And, thank you for putting your money where your mouth is.”

  • Syracuse University Credit for Personal Finance in Harlem!

    Funded Apr 22, 2019

The books have arrived!!!!!!!!!! They are in the house! This is all so very exciting!!!!! I can't wait to convert my Financial Math class into a Syracuse University Project Advance Personal Finance class next year.

The student interest is ridiculous! These photos show incoming students already checking out their new textbooks!

I've signed up for a one-week training program at Syracuse University in July to train me to become an adjunct professor and to teach this course at the college level. Additionally, I will be attending a Financial Literacy conference in November to build a network of other Personal Finance educators and to get some great new ideas.

Between the new textbooks and my upcoming professional development, I have great plans and ambitions for next year!

THANK YOU for making this possible!!!!!!”

  • Let's Show Our Work - Harlem Scholars Rock!

    Funded May 9, 2019

What a game changer!!!! Students being able to write directly on the SMARTBoard to show their work is a great asset to their colleagues in the class. Oftentimes having a peer explain their process helps others understand better. Students are more fully engaged with one another now that we have this fabulous tool. Also, with two pens, two students can work at the board at the same time which is efficient and saves us valuable class time.

The presenter clicker is fantastic in that I can circulate throughout the room while advancing through slides. This allows me to interact better and more often with the students while the lesson is proceeding. I love being in the middle of the action rather than being tethered to the keyboard.

    Thanks for making this possible!!!!”

This school year, I am teaching two college-level courses (AP Statistics and AP Microeconomics) to a group of dedicated and extremely motivated students. These students are willing to work hard in class, study long hours and meet on Saturdays and during vacations to master this rigorous material. They understand the value of a good education and want to improve their circumstances. Every one of these students is a minority; virtually all of these students have challenging home environments and are living in poverty. Every one of these students plans to attend college. Most will be the first generation in their family to attend an institute of higher learning. These are strong students - determined and ambitious students - who deserve the resources to achieve their full potential.
