  • Hungry Harlem AP students

    Funded Feb 8, 2023

Thank you so very much for helping me nourish my scholars as they work hard to prepare for their big Advanced Placement examination next week.

We've met on Saturdays and we've met during spring break. Each session has been 2 hours. That's a long time for teenagers to focus and stay motivated. And, teenagers love to EAT! The snacks really helped keep their energy levels up so that they could ask and answer questions and review the material in AP Microeconomics.

    We really appreciate your kindness.”

  • Financial Literacy for Harlem Teens!

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

What a great day in Personal Finance class today! The Motley Fool Investment books were distributed today, the day before the holiday break, as a holiday gift to all the students.

Some students don't get any holiday gifts at home so it is especially meaningful to them. Just getting a NEW book - one that they can keep - is a big deal to most of my students.

They were immediately intrigued by the cover of the book where it states "8 Steps to Having More Money Than Your Parents Ever Dreamed Of". Financial Literacy is a key component to social mobility.

Just look at their delighted faces! We have an 11 day break this year, so they'll have something productive and entertaining to read at some point during their days off.

    Thanks for making this possible.”

  • Help Harlem Rock the AP Microeconomics Exam!

    Funded Nov 28, 2022

The books arrived and were immediately distributed to the class. The kids were PSYCHED!

This particular crop of students are having trouble getting into a study routine. They developed some bad habits during remote learning [during covid school shut downs] that they are trying hard to correct. At the same time, they are trying to learn HOW to study.

These books are a great tool. The beginning section of the book discusses study and test taking strategies. It discusses time management. Each concept is reviewed clearly with examples. Practice questions follow each unit - with the answers clearly explained [both why the correct answer is correct as well as why the wrong answers are wrong]. This provides my students with more practice than we can accomplish together in class - but with the same type of question/answer analysis that I provide in person.

Thanks so much for your kindness and support.”

  • Help Harlem Learn Personal Finance - Part II

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

All the books arrived about two weeks ago and we were finally able to have our first chapter exam early this week. It's so helpful for the students to have a textbook resource to reinforce the powerpoint lessons and classroom activities. The books are well written with up to date data, charts and examples.

The students feel more comfortable with a printed resource that they can refer to and solidify their understanding. With that added resource, the first exam went well.

This course is provided through the Syracuse University Project Advance program and it was essential that we obtain the required textbooks. Our school could not fund this resource, so your help was crucial in allowing me to offer the class as intended.

Myself and my students really appreciate you.”

  • Harlem Takes On the AP Microeconomics Exam!

    Funded Apr 6, 2022

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. The AP Microeconomics exam will be administered in just a couple of days - at noon on Friday, May 6th.

My scholars are feeling prepared and you helped with that.

The copy paper allowed me to prepare copies of 5 mock exams that the students completed and we went over. The tissues have helped keep us all clean and illness free. The snacks have helped the kids address their hunger and stay focused during test prep after a long day of school, on Saturdays and during spring break.

I've saved 2 Gatorade bottles, 2 Popchips and 2 granola bars for each student to take with them for a boost during the break between the two sections of the exam on Friday.

You've done a good thing helping these deserving kids.”

  • Harlem First-Generation College Students Seeking Advice

    Funded Mar 6, 2020

Due to Covid, I wasn't able to distribute these books until this year. I waited until college applications had gone out. I actually distributed them right before the December break when I knew students would have time to read them; it also doubled as a nice holiday gift.

The kids LOVED them! They are so excited to go to college and those acceptances are rolling in now. Students keep arriving to class quoting passages and scenarios from the book. The books are greatly appreciated and are being heavily used.

Thank you so much for helping my deserving students get advice about the college experience.”

  • Help Harlem Economists!

    Funded Nov 28, 2021

We have been using Albert io for two months now with great success. This online tool is fabulous.

Students answer multiple choice and free response questions - which are created to simulate the level of rigor of actual Advanced Placement Microeconomics questions. I select the questions from a bank of question conveniently organized by College Board required topics for this course.

Sometimes the questions I assign are related to the current topic we are studying in class. Other times, the questions spiral back to previous topics to keep those concepts fresh in students' minds.

After the due date, students are able to see their own response, the correct response as well as a very thorough explanations of why the right answer is right and why all the wrong answers are wrong. This is extremely helpful so enable students to LEARN form their MISTAKES. After all, mistakes are learning opportunities.

The teacher tools include seeing an item analysis so I can track common errors as well student by student analysis.

This is a fantastic tool for both the teacher and the student. Thank you for making it possible for our class to utilize this study tool. We appreciate you.”

  • Black Wall Street Educational Game for Harlem Scholars

    Funded Jan 30, 2020

That was quite a year!!!! Thank you once again for your generosity in supporting my classroom.

Even though our school shut down very abruptly in March and for the balance of the school year, we were able to get one round of this game in. The kids LOVED it.

The game works a lot like Monopoly - which has all kinds of financial literacy lessons already embedded the game format - but with a history twist. The beauty of this game i that students learn about the history of the Greenwood District in Tulsa and Tulsa Race Massacre. Actual street names and retail establishments that had existed before the massacre in 1921 are included in the game.

This game was the perfect way to make my financial literacy lessons culturally relevant to my students in Harlem.

Thank you for making this possible. Even though our U.S. History courses do not always include the history of all Americans, this game was one small way to fill in one of the gaps.

You made a real difference. My apologizes for not being able to include photos or student thank you letters. We went remote before I had a chance to do so.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Viau

This school year, I am teaching two college-level courses (AP Statistics and AP Microeconomics) to a group of dedicated and extremely motivated students. These students are willing to work hard in class, study long hours and meet on Saturdays and during vacations to master this rigorous material. They understand the value of a good education and want to improve their circumstances. Every one of these students is a minority; virtually all of these students have challenging home environments and are living in poverty. Every one of these students plans to attend college. Most will be the first generation in their family to attend an institute of higher learning. These are strong students - determined and ambitious students - who deserve the resources to achieve their full potential.
