As a first-year teacher, these books will enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. During my student teaching, I saw my mentor’s classroom library serve as a place that our students really enjoyed, and I want to create the same space in my own classroom. I want to foster a love of independent reading and create an environment that provides the time for that. The benefits are endless, from stress reduction and knowledge growth to vocabulary expansion and improved focus. The creation of this purposeful space and allotted time for independent reading will allow my students choice in their education by providing them with the opportunity to choose books that are meaningful to them, as well as books that are at their appropriate reading level. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students become stronger readers. They will also invite my students to view the world in different ways and will expose them to experiences that will inspire them to share their own stories and use their own voices to create change. In the words of Dr. Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
