  • Mas Libros to Support Learning

    Funded Dec 28, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations. We have had several new students arrive at our school who do not speak English, and Spanish is their primary language. These books will help these second language learner students. It will help them to continue reading in their primary language, and several teachers have requested these books to begin teaching similar words and phrases in English.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Colson

  • Face Out and Check Out

    Funded Aug 8, 2022

Thank you so much for your donation to our library. Your donation helped to purchase floating shelves and clear magazine holders. Studies show that when books are displayed in a meaningful way, their circulation increases.

When we put books on our display shelves they are instantly checked out. We have been using these shelves to highlight skills, genres, authors, and topics that we discuss during our library lessons. We are constantly refilling those shelves because the books are checked out so quickly.

Thank you for your donation. It has made a great impact on students accessibility to specific books and topics.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Colson

  • Replace the Missing Book

    Funded Aug 4, 2022

There is nothing more frustrating to a librarian then when a student has been quickly reading a series to discover that we are missing the next book. This project that you help fund, alleviates the frustration of not having a book a student desperately wants to read. With your donation, we were able to buy books that were missing from popular series.

Once the series had all of the books, we placed them on the shelf grouped together with an informational tag. This has been so helpful to have the students go to their favorite series and grab the next book they need to read.

Thank you so much for generous donation. This donation helps our students enjoy reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Colson

  • Emerging Readers, Emerging Books, Emerging Interests

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

Thank you so much for supporting our library. Our emerging readers needed a place to find books that they could check out without worrying about the level or content. It's been incredible to watch our kindergarten and first graders choose a book with confidence.

We have spend several lessons with our early readers discussing how to choose a book and how to tell if a book is appropriate for them. With the addition of more emerging reading books, the students have a wide variety to select from.

We have created new sections in our library for both emerging readers: non-fiction and fiction. The students love to be able to grab a book about their favorite animal, and know that they will be able to read it and enjoy it.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Colson

  • Social, Emotional, and Character Development Through Literature

    Funded Feb 9, 2022

This last year we were able to incorporate so many of these books into our library time. We used them to help students learn how to interact with on another. The books were used to teach our district's mission and values through the six C characteristics.

In library we read "I am Enough" and "Day you Begin" to discuss the importance of self worth and who we are each different and unique. Books like the "Bad Seed" and "Stand Tall Molly Lou" inspired discussions on how we treat others that our different then us. Last year, we had a student enter our school for the first time he would be speaking English. The class read "Chocolate Milk, Por Favor". This lead to a great discussion on how we treat others that are new to our school and that are different then us.

We had a unit were we used different books to look at inventions. We learned how the slinky, crayons, and bubble gum were invented. These books led to a great discussion on the characteristics of Creativity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Colson

We need to teach our students how to understand their emotions, become self-aware, and develop more empathy to those around them. More and more schools are adopting social and emotional learning standards, and our district has selected six objectives and standards for social and emotional learning. I have chosen a large selection of literature that helps teachers discuss and engage with students about different topics and concerns for their social and emotional learning. Literature is a great tool to open the doorway for discussion and self-reflection. Several books have been selected to promote conversations about the six social and emotional objectives our district has selected. These books will be used during library times and are also available for teachers to check out and use in their classrooms. With a wide variety of texts, teachers can select the perfect age-appropriate level to use to meet their classroom needs. In addition to literature, several books will be purchased to aid teachers in effective strategies to coach students through different social and emotional needs. These resources will be available to teachers and parents to check out.
