My school is a happy place. We fill buckets and give compliments. We help each other and strive to portray the weekly character traits. We help keep the lunchroom clean each day, and we finger wave at friends passing by. At any given day, you can see us reading outside in the courtyard, while our pet tortoise, Emily, crawls around. Students read with the principal and participate in the "Be Kind" program. We also earn charms for our necklaces based on achievement. My 18 first graders are amazing. They come from low socio- economic areas, and are appreciative of our school and learning. Many of our students are minorities and ELL. They love to do centers. It really helps them to get the "wiggles out" to be able to move around the room to play learning games, do counting movement and activities, and to solidify hands-on learning styles. There are days when we have challenges and have to relearn something or practice using indoor voices, but we always have fun learning in our room!
