My classroom has many students who are struggling to learn. We are a school that serves a high poverty population, and a large percentage of students are impacted by trauma and other factors that negatively impact them, which translates into behavioral, social and emotional issues. I have 5 students on IEPs for behavioral or developmental issues and several more who struggle with ADHD and the feeling that their bodies are 'excited' and need to move all the time. My goal is to provide these children with a choice in their seating and a way to move safely while focusing on learning. I have seen kids like mine in other classrooms who are successful using wiggle seats or ball chairs, and I really would like to purchase these resources for my class. Unfortunately, our school does not have the budget to do this. Deficits in learning and exposure to physical school last year have impacted this group in such a way that they are essentially Kindergartners...just starting out and really needing that extra comfort and flexibility that a Kindergarten classroom can provide. I would like to be able to give all my children a choice in their seating at tables, and more comfort in their sit spots as we spend so much of our time at the carpet. I have many kids whose stamina for sitting at the carpet is just not there yet. They will cry and lie down, crawl around or turn around backwards. Some tell me they are hurting and want to go sit at their seats (our floors are concrete with a thin carpet) because they are uncomfortable. I'm hoping some colorful, soft pads will help them look forward to time at the carpet and extend their ability to sit up and focus.
