  • Middle Schoolers Love to Read

    Funded Mar 26, 2018

Thank you so much for donating the books and bookcase for Middle Schoolers Love to read. This project was funded at the end of the year for a grade level of 96 6th grade students. While I was unable to take photos of students reading and enjoying the influx of amazing reading materials at their interest and reading level, I had many students who struggled with reading actually begin to read these books. It is difficult low level readers in upper grades to find books that interest them. This project really helped. I am now teaching at a different school site, but the books have made their way into the classroom. I started late in the year and already have students asking to borrow books. For me, the passion and love of reading is possible to spread to frustrated students. I tell them how I too struggled with reading comprehension as a students, something I eventually outgrew as an adult. As I tell them frequently, its not that they don't like reading, its just that they haven't found the right book.

Thank you again for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Uribe

  • Writing in Color for High Poverty Students

    Funded Nov 18, 2015

Thank you so much for your support of my students through our project. Through your generosity, I have been able to regularly give my students Scholastic News, a weekly publication of informative writing that reports on current events at their reading level. I have used our Scholastic News to teach close reading strategies to help build vocabulary and reading comprehension. These are challenging articles but they love them. My 32 students are currently working on a new research project for learning about our states. Each student will have to research on the Internet about their states history, symbols and attractions and draw or print everything to be displayed on a poster board for our schools annual open house in May. Although the printer I bought the ink for is currently clogged, It will be working soon and the students will be able to print their research in color for them to show their friends and family. As a school of highest poverty in our city, these children don't have access to these things at home. It is very exciting for them to be able to have access at school. Thank you again for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Uribe

Each day I have the honor of teaching 96 sixth grade students. Most are English Language learners from and come from an immigration background. Many of them are come from families living in poverty, working multiple jobs to make end meet and can offer little help with homework or projects. Reading and comprehending is something a lot have given up over the years of unsuccessful intervention programs. Trying to inspire a love or reading with students halfway to adulthood is an uphill battle. Please help inspire these fragile readers with new book to inspire their creativity and imaginations.
