  • Help Bring American Revolution to Life!

    Funded Dec 31, 2021

Thank you for your support. Currently, we started our American Revolution Reading and Writing unit! Because of the new books you donated, my class showed a great passion on this unit. Everyone was very excited! Students learned to do literature review, and grew their knowledge on the topic they picked. Everyday, we thoroughly discuss American Revolution. Students express their opinions and listen to their peers' viewpoints. I am very happy to see how they respond on this unit. With your help, I was able to bring the history alive to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chen

  • More Books for Book Lovers!

    Funded Jun 3, 2019

I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my busy readers! My students are impressed by these new and beautiful books. When they first saw me holding the books, they said with amazement, "Wow! New Books!" I introduced the books to the class and put them in our class library so that everyone can access them anytime. Everyone wants to read the new books during reading workshop. Moreover, my students can't wait to put the books into their reading baggies and bring them home to share with their family.

Though we are still reading these new books, I can already see a difference in all the students involved. They always ask me to read new books during our read-aloud. They are excited to hear what happens in the book which comes to the beautiful pictures. Furthermore, everyone has enjoyed getting together with other peers to discuss the books, such as the basic story elements, and the character traits. Even I used the books as the mentor texts for the reading and writing workshops. One student's reading level even moves up!

It has been a real eye-opener and empathic project for my students. Thank you for giving them this opportunity. We can't thank you enough for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chen

  • Discovering the Weather and Natural Disasters!

    Funded Oct 22, 2018

I want to begin this letter by just saying thank you again. When the new textbooks arrived, the students were very excited. I have already begun using them in my classroom, and the books have become another tool of learning for my students.

Because of these beautiful books we have received, my students are able to use them all for our extreme weather unit. We use the books to research extreme weather in a small group, such as hurricane, tornado, and earthquake. Students discuss the causes, types, famous events, and other interesting things of extreme weather. Then, they put their thoughts and findings on the post-its. Students switch their topics after about one and a half week. Therefore, each student has a chance to study two extreme weather. Moreover, we even built tornado models using bottles after reading one of the tornado books. We observed a whirlpool of water and discussed how tornado affects people's lives. One of my students exclaimed happily during the experiment, "This is the best day of my life ever! I enjoy it so much!"

These books are going to be placed in our classroom library after this unit. Students can read these engaging books during their independent reading time in school or borrow them and read them at home. Thank you all for your dedication and generosity to the students in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chen

I teach in a Title 1 school where most of the students come from low-income families. English is not my students' first language. I teach 12:1:1 special education classroom. My students have different kinds of special needs, such as autism, intellectual disabilities, and speech and language impairments. My students work hard, and they do not let their special needs prevent them from accomplishing every performance task.
